Brintney’s SF Visit, Minus Speculation

by Accidental Bear

Finally the real story, with facts, minus all the layers of speculation. If Ms Spears brings an once of good and support to the gay community, we’ll take. As far as her live performances, we’ll tap our red slippers together and chant, ” Please don’t suck, Please don’t suck” , but that’s all we can do on this side of praying for a miracle.

Pop star Britney Spears visited the GLBT Historical Society Museum in the Castro last Sunday after her mini-concert at Bill Graham Auditorium where she was given a brief tour by curator Gerard Koskovich, who pointed out Harvey Milk's bullhorn in one of the display cases. For more on Spears's visit, see the Out on the Town column. Photo: Dan Nicoletta

Spears visit was a team effort by LGBT leaders

by Matt Baume

It took a gay village to bring Britney Spears to San Francisco, starting with mayoral candidate Bevan Dufty and extending to bar owners, drag queens, and cheerleaders.

The saga started with Mark Robertson, a producer at ABC’s Good Morning America and a longtime friend of Dufty’s. In late 2010, Dufty said, Robertson called him to propose shooting a Britney Spears promotional video in the Castro.

That set off months of discussions and negotiations. From the beginning, Dufty felt strongly that the show should feature local celebrity drag queens.

“While people may jet around Brentwood trying to spot Cameron Diaz, our drag personalities are our celebrities,” Dufty said. “They raise money constantly for different charities. They add a lot to the vitality of the Castro. I was straightforward with Mark that I felt it was really important that they be onstage and be part of the program.”

HIV post-exposure Prophylaxis for Free

by Accidental Bear

Have you fallen off the safety wagon? Extend hands, palms down, *** SMACK*** Living life without judgement is quite an effort. I equate this PEP to the day after pill for women, but dealing with HIV infection is leaps and bounds heavier than giving birth to an unwanted bastard. This article raises many questions? What time frame does an exposed person has? Cost?

Walk All Over Elizabeth Taylor in West Hollywood

by Accidental Bear

Has she even been buried yet? What ever the answer is to that, Elizabeth Taylor is making headlines and creating a buzz. West Hollywood is usually a buzz with hung over-meth-head-tragic -scensters, but today the West Hollywood gays are demanding a street be named after Elizabeth (we’re on first names basis). Street, Avenue, or Alley, Elizabeth has put in her time with the gay community and is deserving to walked all over for eternity.

West Hollywood residents are calling for a street to be named after actress and AIDS activist Elizabeth Taylor, who died last week at age 79.

According to LA Weekly, Michelle Rex, the interim deputy director for Councilman John D’Amico, residents have been calling and writing City Hall to suggest the street naming, but there has not yet been any formal discussion among city leaders.

Taylor, a major early force in AIDS fundraising, spent time at West Hollywood spots including The Abbey, where she sipped shots of tequila.

Converse for ACE Hotel; On the Money!

by Accidental Bear

Testing my super hero powers, I squeezed my eyes super shut, chanted some jibber jabber and tried to transpot these Converse into my closet so I could sport these lookers today. Sad to say, all I found was soiled laundry  and muddy hiking boots. Until I fine tune my powers, I guess I’ll do old fashion mail order.

Now in blue/black, the All Star Bosey is back… “Inspired by shoes from the Converse archive, they feel like a sneaker, but with rugged boot detailing and design cues taken from vintage wading boots and shoes Converse created for US Military basic training in the 1940s.” Rock star status on this one.

Don’t fear Quality | Albam has Matured

by Accidental Bear

Selectism Sessions | Albam

via Selectism Selectism - albamWe first interviewed Albam back in August of 2009 and at that time, it was still a relatively small company, although they had struck a chord with a wide audience. Fast forward two years and they’re seen as the frontrunners of a trend, have three stores and local manufacture has become a buzz topic. So how have things changed for them? We interviewed James Shaw, getting him on video this time, and found out how things have changed and what’s next.

Great Loss; 15 yr old, Jumped to his Death

by Accidental Bear

Sticks and stones can break my bones but words can never hurt me, may need to be updated. I cry in my coffee this morning.

Dominic Crouch died last May

Schoolboy, 15, jumped to his death after rumors he was gay

A Gloucestershire teenager jumped to his death after rumours circulated that he was gay, an inquest has heard.

Dominic Crouch, 15, a pupil at St Edwards School in Cheltenham, threw himself from a six-storey block of flats last May after returning from a school trip.

An inquest in Cheltenham heard that pupils played spin the bottle on the four-day art trip and there were rumours that Dominic had kissed a boy.

His parents said he appeared happy when he returned from the trip but just days later, he left school at lunchtime to go to the block of flats where he got to the roof via a trapdoor.

Notes were found in his pockets apologising to his parents.

Dominic’s family are raising money in his name for the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund which supports children in South Africa.

Warhol statue for Union Square NYC, Wow!

by Accidental Bear

Andy Warhol Monument to be Unveiled in NYC’s Union Square Today

Visual artist Rob Pruitt will be unveiling “The Andy Monument”, a statue commemorating pop artist and icon Andy Warhol, today at 6 pm in NYC’s Union Square.

By RICH CALDER @ New York Post

Washington. Lincoln. Ghandi … and now Warhol.

A massive monument honoring Andy Warhol – the late, great Father of Pop Art — will be unveiled today at a new pedestrian plaza in Union Square.

The nearly 10-foot-tall statue by visual artist Rob Pruitt will set up outside a building at Broadway and 17th Street that housed the final rendition of Warhol’s legendary “Factory” from 1973 to 1984.

Warhol and his contemporaries previously produced silkscreen paintings, magazines and other works out of a site a block away from 1967 to 1973. The original Warhol “Factory” on E. 47th Street operated from 1962 to 1967.

Ask the Expert: Is Anderson Cooper’s closet really about bias?

by Accidental Bear

Anderson Cooper is one of those men I haven’t really spent any time thinking about. He doesn’t fly into my radar. People get so angry when a gay public figure doesn’t go public tell everyone how GAY they are. Him being a flaming homosexual is not his job, reporting the news is his job. I think this may be a case of discretion, which I think more people would benefit from having. I think gays should not take it so personally and mind their own business.

Q: I’m confused by Anderson Cooper. Gawker says he brought his boyfriend to Mardi Gras. I know his whole schtick is that he doesn’t talk about his personal life because he doesn’t want it to compromise his neutrality as a journalist, which is standard behavior and something that I have no problem with. But he is far from neutral when it comes to LGBT rights. He’s been very active in covering anti-bullying news and other things relevant to the LGBT community, and in my opinion, I think that compromises his neutrality. Also, can we really consider him in the closet if he attends such public events as Mardi Gras with his “boyfriend?

I don’t know what to think. Some say he should disclose his sexuality just as he discloses that he comes from wealthy family and modeled for Calvin Klein. On the other hand, he’s talked about LGBT topics, favorably, in public before. It’s almost as if, by not coming out, he’s letting people pass some unspoken judgment about him and his opinion of/relationship with homosexuality. Bu why should I even be concerned with his personal life, especially considering I have the privilege of not being in the lime light? — Chaz, New Orleans, LA

A: If Anderson Cooper really is gay, I absolutely support his right to be publicly closeted if that’s his choice. Only he can decide what’s right for him.

Shave with some Whiskey

by Accidental Bear

I am not sure showing up to work after your shit, shower, and shave, smelling like Whiskey would be the best idea.

Portland General Store Whiskey Wet Shave Jelly

Portland General Store Whiskey Wet Shave Jelly

Shave with some whiskey, my friends. “This is a wonderfully rich, lathering shave soap with a lovely scent of WHISKEY. Blended into this soap is bentonite clay, also referred to as Montmorillonite, one of the most effective and powerful healing clays used to treat both internal and external maladies. Bentonite is a highly absorbent clay that pulls oils and toxins from the skin.” Blackbird carries the line.
