Rachel Maddow at NRA Convention

by Accidental Bear

My Rachel is good on her word and attends NRA convention with Meghan McCain, as promised. I wish I were able to get a play by play of the dialogue that was going through Rachel’s head while walking the floor of convention filled with gun loving republicans (inbreeds).

Maddow, McCain, and Guns
By Advocate.com Editors

Back in January, Rachel Maddow accepted an invitation from Meghan McCain to attend the next National Rifle Association convention. It kicked off Friday, and the two political commentators are there.

Maddow posted a couple of pictures on her website with McCain on the floor of the convention. Coverage of Maddow’s time at the convention will be featured on Monday’s Rachel Maddow Show.

Maddow is no stranger to guns — she’s said that her first date with partner Susan Mikula was at a shooting range.

Born this Way Movement (√ I like)

I love when it’s reinforced, that indeed, I do have a heart. I just got goose bumps watching this 11 yr young man sing his heart out in the safety of an accepting audience. When Gaga came out with her “Born this Way” song, naysayers were out with there picket signs and bitter words before the record was out for an hour (myself included). I am realizing now, the movement that is happening behind the song. Whether you like Gaga or not doesn’t matter. It is one thing to be told as a queer youth that it is OK to be gay/bi/trans, but giving a creative platform, a stage, gives those words power. Gaga is out there being proactive and creating change. What are you doing? So, turn down your quick-to-judge-toxic-people-reader-meter and embrace the Born this Way movement. √ i like

“Chris Dorosz Pushes Paint in Unexpected Directions”

by Accidental Bear

*Contributed by Monkeypuzzle

Talented Hunk Alert!

“Chris Dorosz pushes paint in unexpected directions with remarkable results. He has a few distinct techniques, including filling canvases with grids of industrial staples that hold pools of color, and dripping globs of paint onto clear rods or monofilament strands to create fragmented, 3-D objects and figures. His process is equally regimented and relaxed, much like his enviable lifestyle in South Beach: making art, teaching, hitting the gym, and walking the dog. We paid him a visit to grill him about his studio secrets, and discovered a mutual love for a certain female singer. Let’s just say you might see the three of us at Trannyshack‘s Kate Bush Tribute Night.”

“I consider what I do painting. I like the historic implications of painting as a document. It’s a trace of somebody who was living and actually stood there in front of the object at arm’s length working on it. It’s a metaphor for the human presence. It’s just like pushing mud around. I have this vision that when all the electricity goes out and we’re potentially starting over again, we’ll always have mud to push around on a cave wall.” – Chris Dorosz from Interview with EKG at KGED

Chris Dorosz’s recently released textbook, Designing With Color: Concepts and Applications, is available through Fairchild Books.

Karl Lagerfeld Designed Himself a Chocolate Young Man “Companion” (video)

by Accidental Bear

Fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld has teamed up with star French chocolatier Patrick Roger, to create a hotel room made from over 10 ton of chocolate. Included in this design is a chocolate young man “companion” holding what looks to be a fudge sickle (slightly awkward). But you are Karl Lagerfeld after all, do what you want. I am just curious if his new chocolate friend is anatomically correct. Skid marks?

Furni Black “Rockassins” Comfort Over Style

by Accidental Bear

Help! I really am interested in these. It may be a case of giving in to comfort over fashion (although these are quite cute in a probably wouldn’t leave the house in them way, but I wear them all the time at home). Shush, it’s old age.

Furni Black “Rockassins”
On May 9, 2011 Furni will release the second round of their “Rockassin.”

Here’s what the French Canadian blokes have to say, “It’s time to “rock the moc”. We’ve teamed up with a family owned business with almost 40 years of experience making snowshoes, moccasins and other Indian handcrafts here in Canada to offer you these beauties. These crepe soled ankle high moccasins are made from supple “black”leather. Each pair will be skillfully crafted by hand to order in small batches less than 250kms from our Montreal workshop.”

Tom Goss’s San Francisco CD Release with Jeb Havens Sunday/ SF CA

by Accidental Bear

Clear your calendar for this Sunday, May 1 at 5pm to catch the rising star Tom Goss perform at Kimo’s in San Francisco for his CD release party. For double the pleasure SF’s own Jeb Havens will be performing as well. Join the party, this is where it  will be happening on Sunday. Come join the action and show some love.

Tom Goss is a unique voice among gay singer-songwriters—a former Catholic seminarian turned guitar-toting troubadour whose heartfelt lyrics, hooky melodies and quirky charm have earned him a dedicated national following.

Since he started performing in DC coffeehouses in 2006, the tireless 29-year-old hasn’t let any moss grow under his trademark flip flops: two full-length CDs (Naked Without and Back to Love), two EPs (Rise and The Politics of Love), a live DVD (Live At Terry’s), four music videos—two rose to the #1 and #2 viewer-choice slots on MTV’s LOGO network—and nearly 500 shows in 100 cities nationwide. His latest CD, Turn It Around, releases April 12, supported by a ten-week, 50-city tour.” READ BIO

Q & A with Nick Burns Co-author of The Bearded Gentleman: The Style Guide to Shaving

by Accidental Bear

I have never had such an informative, enjoyable and dare I say smart conversation about facial hair. My usual conversations goes something like this, ” Uhh, you got something in your beard.”… ” Thanks!” Nick Burns co-author of The Bearded Gentlemen: The Style Guide to Shaving is loaded with helpful information to care for and tame that overgrown bush on your face or perhaps just your upper lip. His extensive back round as a journalist,  has covered skin care, fashion, and health for leading magazines and newspapers including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, GQ, Details, Elle Accessories, Out, and Zink, and he pens the popular men’s style blog, HommeGrooming.com., makes him over qualified for me to ask him about how to best trim my unruly nose hairs (But I ask anyhow). Nick’s writing is witty and sharp as well as his answers to my questions I brainstormed for him.

Q & A:

Interview by Mike Enders

Accidental Bear:  How is it that you and Allan Peterkin came together to produce this much needed book together?

Nick Burns: Allan wrote a book called 1000 Beards: A Cultural History of Facial Hair and I interviewed him for a piece I wrote for the New York Times about the return of the mustache–a bunch of hipsters in Williamsburg started sprouting whiskers above their lips in 2008. We worked together on a few other articles after that and when his publisher asked him to write the follow up to 1000 Beards, he asked me to help out.

A B:  I would love to call you King of whiskers. What has been the fire under you that make you want to write about the topic?

Nick: I think “King of Whiskers” is too lofty of a title for little old me. Maybe Prince of Whiskers? Well, when your name contains “Nick” and “Burns”, writing about shaving is kind of like your birthright… sort of like being born into the royal family.
