Italian Official Thinks Ad for Ikea Featuring a Gay Couple Holding Hands is “in bad taste”

by Accidental Bear

I have bloodied my knuckles putting together bed frames, dressers and lamps from IKEA, breaking all stereotypes and whooping out my jaw dropping macho hammer and putting it to work. No one needs to know there are always a few extra screws when I’m finished. If it weren’t for my “gay gene” my finished products wouldn’t have all come together for one glorious vision of luxury (gay enough for you). Done with my confession. What does this “top” Italian know about taste anyhow? Does he know that it is tacky and VERY bad taste to discriminate? I say send him back to finishing school, take away his cell phone privilege for a week and put him in a room full of IKEA furniture and let him think about what he’s said and make him write a 1,000 word paper about respect (3 snaps up in a circle).

Via Advocate.com

A top Italian official thinks an ad for Swedish furniture maker Ikea featuring a gay couple holding hands is “in bad taste” and in direct opposition to Italy’s constitution.

Secretary of State for family policy Carlo Giovanardi says he thinks it is “in bad taste that a Swedish multinational comes to Italy to tell Italians what they should think.”

The ad, which features two men holding hands, reads, “We are open to all families.”

Straight For Pay Actors Act Out Straight Stereotypes

by Accidental Bear

I mean, how hard could it be unless you are born with a gigantic lisp and a runway walk? Some of my guy hetero friends are the most “gay acting” people I know. So, for a gay actor to play “straight” he is stuck having to cater to macho, masculine stereotypes to pass I guess. As far as straight men playing gay, I am usually insulted beyond belief. Someone please tell Hollywood that gay guys don’t all act the same and you can’t always tell just by looking at one (looks around the room awkward).

‘I’m Not a Hetero, But I Play One On TV’: 12 Gay Actors Who Took on Straight Roles – and Proved the Naysayers Wrong”
Posted by Chris Eggertsen @ Afterelton.com
hough openly-gay Newsweek journalist Ramin Setoodeh’s infamous 2010 article “Straight Jacket” was certainly a misguided piece of criticism, it unfortunately brought to light an all-too-common misconception held by both Hollywood decision makers and members of the public at large – that gay actors are incapable of adequately portraying straight characters on-screen.

History, of course, shows that ludicrous assertion to be entirely false – particularly considering the number of closeted gay actors from earlier eras who vaulted to stardom specifically because they were able to convincingly portray straight romantic leads. READ MORE

“Gay in America” Due Out Sept 27, 2011

by Accidental Bear

“In this first-ever photographic survey of gay men in America, stereotypes are laid to rest and an intimate, honest picture of contemporary gay life is revealed through stunning personal portraits and narratives.

Photographer Scott Pasfield traveled 52,000 miles across all fifty states over a two-year span gathering stories and documenting the lives of 150 gay men from all walks of life. At turns joyful and somber, reflective and celebratory, each narrative and image is an enlightening look into the variety of gay life in the United States.

Pasfield’s striking and perceptive portraits reflect the same beautiful diversity found in any sampling of our population. Each of these men is unique and whole, complex and fallible, just as we all are. They come in every size and shape, every religion, color, profession, and background. There are farmers, writers, doctors, lawyers, artists, teachers, students; there are fathers and husbands, activists, and business men. Some are successful, some are struggling, some are political, some are wealthy, some are wounded, and some are deeply content.

Their commonality draws from a single shared trait: their homosexuality. These are men who are attracted to men, and have chosen not to disguise that truth. For many, there have been harsh consequences to this decision, but also deep rewards. The message that prevails is one of great hope that true equality is close within our reach, if only we would grasp it.”

by Accidental Bear

The lovely fuzz ball of a model here is competing with the compelling back round for this shoot. I suggest this collection for the sad artist type who may be color blind.

Camo Vento Trousers; Fine Line Between Love and Hate

by Accidental Bear

We are sitting at the top of the roller coaster with anticipation of what’s to come next. In this case, we know what’s coming, pleated trousers! It’s not a matter of just heading out to H&M and buying some new cheap pleaded pants. Take a look at picture below, you need to take into consideration, pant length, shirt length, sox and shoes. There is so much potential for FASHION GONE WRONG HERE. Maybe this should be left up to the professionals.

Is everyone ready for pleated trousers? Because they’re not going anywhere. We’ve heard the warning horns about them for eons, but despite that (or because of them) designers keep working on versions that look good. These ones are by Camo and they have us reconsidering our aversion to the high waisted trouser. We have Simon Cowell to thank for our reticence on that issue. (ASOS)

Advocates Rally in Support of Transgender Beating Victim

by Accidental Bear

What is most disturbing about this video of a trans women being attacked is the amount of men that didn’t lift a finger to help, but egged on the situation with laughter and a playful banter that would make anyone with a conscience, sick to their stomach. – AB

On Monday, hundreds of people rallied in front of the McDonald’s restaurant in Maryland where a transgender woman was viciously beaten by two teenage girls.

The victim, 23-year-old Chrissy Polis did not attend the rally but members of her family showed up in support, including her mother, Renee Carr.
“The turnout tonight is wonderful, I’m so happy,” Carr said. “I didn’t think that McDonald’s was a dangerous place, all she wanted to do was eat and use the bathroom.”

Last week Polis was attacked outside of the restroom in the restaurant. A worker recorded the beating which shows Polis trying to defend herself. The video was posted online and quickly went viral.

A female customer, 55-year-old Vicki Thoms, tried to intervene but was struck in the face by one of the attackers.

Cary Grant’s Daughter: Dad Wasn’t Gay

by Accidental Bear

Gays are so obsessed with WANTING certain male actors to be gay. I don’t give a rats ass whether Tom Cruise is gay (unless he’s treating me to a delightful BJ), nor do I think he is. Does it make a difference in your lonely, shallow life, if someone who you will never meet and doesn’t know that you exist, are gay? I know a part of being gay is to being overly curious (nosey) , but give it a rest. Tome Cruise and John Travolta, I got your back. Unless you have cold hard evidence, drop it. While you’re at it, I still need evidence that this “thing” people call GOD exists. Got proof?

Cary Grant’s daughter Jennifer writes in a new memoir that her father was not gay, but he didn’t necessarily mind the male attention.
By Advocate.com Editors

Jennifer Grant, the daughter of legendary Hollywood actor Cary Grant, addresses rumors about his sexuality in a new memoir, saying that he was not gay, but he enjoyed the speculation because it made women want him more.

Grant, 45, writes in Good Stuff: A Reminiscence of My Father, which is being published by Alfred A. Knopf on May 3. The actor died in 1986 at age 82. His daughter dedicated the book to her mother, actress Dyan Cannon.

According to People, “As for Cary Grant’s sexuality, ‘Can’t blame men for wanting him, and wouldn’t be surprised if Dad even mildly flirted back,’ his daughter writes. ‘When the question arises, it generally speaks more about the person asking.’”

She continues, “Dad somewhat enjoyed being called gay. He said it made women want to prove the assertion wrong.”

Fed. Government, Shame on You. Dignity is All He had Left

by Accidental Bear

This story breaks my heart. What ever happened to, “Pick on Someone Your Own size!” As I watch this video of Tom and Ron’s heart felt video, tears drop into my coffee. We are not talking ahbout fancy, luxury items here, we are talking about dignity. Shame on you Federal Government! You are a big bully. I want to give you an Indian burn and a wedgie, for starters.

The golden rule
By Cameron Tolle
via www.freedomtomarry.org

I was brought up to believe in the Golden Rule: you should treat others as you want to be treated.

So you can imagine my shock when I heard that my Uncle Ron may have to give up the home he shared with my Uncle Tom, who died in March. Ron and Tom were together for 58 years and they married in California in 2008.

But because the Defense of Marriage Act denies gay spouses the Social Security survivor benefits that would be paid to heterosexual widows and widowers, Ron is not getting the Social Security survivor benefits his husband, Tom, earned.

Freedom to Marry has put together a video to highlight this heartbreaking story. Please take a moment to watch:

Gay Bookstores, Going, Going…

by Accidental Bear

It is sad in general to see book stores closing when statistics of kids graduating from high school illiterate is rising. That’s right I said illiterate! Gays have always had book stores as safe spots to gather outside of piss smelling bars. Some book stores even have viewing booths in the back with mysterious waste high holes in the wall. San Francisco is loosing one of its community staples in the Castro, A Different Light Book Store. What a huge loss for the area as a whole. On an up note I saw a happy member of the community with a 3 feet high stack of porn DVD’s that were going for $2. a piece at the counter anxiously wanting to hurry home and “get busy”.

Whither Gay Bookstores in Calif.?

By Neal Broverman

A Different Light bookstore in San Francisco’s Castro neighborhood will close at the end of this month, but does its departure mean California will be without a gay bookstore?

An Associated Press article from Saturday stated that the Golden State will be gay bookstore-less once A Different Light shutters this month after decades of operation; the bookstore’s West Hollywood branch closed in 2009. But gay-friendly bookstores remain in California, even if they’re not considered gay bookstores, per se. For example, San Diego’s Obelisk bookstore in the gay-centric Hillcrest neighborhood sells jewelry and comic books, as well as LGBT books and HRC merchandise. Circus of Books operates two Los Angeles-area locations — one on West Hollywood’s gay main drag, Santa Monica Boulevard, and another in the gay-friendly neighborhood of Silver Lake — and both stores stock gay novels, magazines, and erotica.

The owner of the Circus of Book stores, Karen Mason, acknowledges her stores serve mainly LGBT customers but she doesn’t see her operations as gay bookstores. READ FULL STORY

Male Student in High Heels Booted from Class

by Accidental Bear

Lets not jump to conclusions. Maybe they were ugly heels?

By Advocate.com Editors

A male student at a Florida high school was removed from class when the response to his wearing high heels sparked “safety” concerns from the principal.

Fox Tampa Bay reports on the incident involving an unidentified student at Riverview High School. A friend said the young man, who wears the heels to feel more confident, felt “shame” for being called out of class.

Rugby Star Ben Cohen Opens up to Accidental; Beer with Ben

by Accidental Bear

It has been confirmed, rugby player (Hunk!) Ben Cohen is just as appealing on the inside as he is on the outside. Ben sparks my interest on so many levels (focus, focus) but I am most fascinated with his tender heart and his work with the gay community and his anti-bullying campaing Beer with Ben. “The Ben Cohen Acceptance Tour will be visiting Atlanta, New York, Washington and Seattle in May this year and will be raising awareness and funds, standing up against homophobia and bullying and standing up for equality, tolerance and mutual respect (Ben).” It is clear that Ben’s priorities are with his twin girls and wife. I tip my hat to him for making the world a better place in his spare time and personally flattered that he is taking on the challenge of my gay brothers and sisters with brute force. Talking with Ben you erase the line between gay and straight and think of everyone as the one. If I had an an award to give, I would be proud to pin it on Ben (preferably shirtless). He opened up and gave me straight from the heart answers.
