“The Chicago Cubs organization celebrates you for exactly who you are, gay or straight,” says Quade. Ricketts, who is a lesbian, says, “We know it can get really tough. I’ve been there.”

The video ends by encouraging struggling youths to go to the It Gets Better website or call the Trevor Project’s suicide prevention hotline.

The San Francisco Giants were the first MLB team to make an It Gets Better video. TheBoston Red Sox and Seattle Mariners have videos in the works for the campaign, started last year by journalist-activist Dan Savage and his partner, Terry Miller. (via Advocate.com)

Jake Gyllenhaal was pushed to his limits by Bear Gryllson a gruelling survival expedition. The Hollywood star, who has trained to get in shape to star in action movies, went to Iceland with the former soldier for his show Born Survivor and asked to be pushed – but admitted he was surprised by how tough he found it.Bear revealed: “A couple of weeks ago I took Jake Gyllenhaal, reportedly the fittest man in Hollywood, on a Born Survivor to Iceland. He said he wanted to to be pushed and afterwards said he’d never been pushed so hard.

Band Watch: Dengue Fever; Cambodian Psychedelic Pop Rock

Cambodia-inspired rock band Dengue Fever is on tour in support of its new album, Cannibal Courtship. In this Live Friday concert, the group will perform at World Cafe Live at the Queen, XPN’s brand new music venue in Wilmington, Del.

Brothers Zac and Ethan Holzman, both loves of vintage Cambodian pop music, formed Dengue Fever in 2001 after a chance meeting with Ch’hom Nimol, an esteemed Cambodian singer who stems from a family of wedding singers and who moved to Long Beach from Cambodia in 2000. Specializing in Khmer Rock (a mix of Cambodian Khmer style and psychedelic pop-rock), Dengue Fever started out as a Camboidan pop cover band. But as the group grew into a dynamic six-piece band featuring saxophone, bass, drums, guitar, farfisa and vocals, it developed into an intriguing hybrid of eastern and western styles.

Nepal Lesbian Wedding: U.S. Couple Weds In Nation’s First Public Same-Sex Ceremony  AKSHINKALI, Nepal (AP) – A lawyer and a college professor from the United States celebrated Nepal’s first public lesbian wedding ceremony Monday in the Himalayan nation that recently began recognizing gay rights and drafting laws to end sexual discrimination. Courtney Mitchell, 41, and Sarah Welton, 48, from Denver, Colorado, celebrated in a Hindu Nepalese tradition at the Dakshinkali temple south of Katmandu, the capital of the Himalayan nation. Local gay rights activists and supporters cheered the ceremony attended by their close friends. Nepal Parliament member Sunilbabu Pant, a gay rights activist, said it was the first public wedding of a lesbian couple in the mostly conservative nation.

Twilight of the Punk: Bob Mould’s New Memoir, “See a Little Light” Reviewed by New York Magazine

Bob Mould needed punk rock. For a big, angry, closeted math-whiz teenager in the outer reaches of upstate New York—where the record store was an hour away, in the metropolis of Plattsburgh—listening to the Ramones, studying the sleeve the record came in, showed what might be possible for him. He could do what they do, he thought. And in fact he did: After moving to Minnesota for college, he and two friends started the pioneering hard-core band Hüsker Dü (named after a board game where the kids could beat the adults). Noisy, speedy—and at least as far as the musicians themselves, high on speed—the band, with Mould as its lumpy front man, combined post-teen provocation and melodic confessionalism in a way that perfectly captured the seesawing, self- protective anxieties of being young. Mould screamed a lot, but underneath was a yearning desire to be understood.Take a song like “Everything Falls Apart”: “I got nothing to do / You got nothing to say / Everything is so fucked up / I guess we like it that way.” It’s a catchy tune that combines those early Hüsker themes. Mould calls it “despair meets resignation.”

Hüsker Dü ended in 1987, and Mould has been experimenting his way out of that balefulness ever since. Punk, as a way of organizing yourself aesthetically, can be a scorched-Earth truth, but Mould is 50 now, and that ethos hasn’t been age- appropriate for some time. So he’s doing his best to find contentment.

That’s one reason he wrote his new memoir, See a Little Light, with Michael Azerrad (Little, Brown & Co., $24.99). It shares a title with one of his not-so-hopeless solo songs. In addition to being a detailed document of punk’s rise to the middle of the culture (including Mould’s successful, though ultimately less influential, early-nineties band Sugar), the book is an unsparing accounting of things he has done wrong, as well as things done to him. It doesn’t often sound like he’s having all that much fun, but he certainly comes off as determined. “With Bob, everything has to have a reason,” says his old friend Steve Fallon, who ran the rigorously booked Hoboken rock club Maxwell’s during the punk-to-indie golden era of 1979 to 1995. “There wasn’t a lot of freewheeling Bob Mould. It was very thought-out and processed. Even his music sounds chaotic, but it really isn’t.”
