OVERVIEW

Lt. Dan Choi served his country with honor in Iraq as an American infantry officer in the U.S. Army. But in June 2010, Lt. Choi was officially discharged from the Army, after coming out as gay on an episode of the Rachel Maddow Show. Now, months after being discharged for violating the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, the Department of Defense wants to charge Lt. Choi more than $2,500, to make up the cost of “the unearned portion” of his enlistment bonus.

America was impressed and a little taken aback when singer Tyler Robinson came out to his dad on the NBC show The Voice. The kid’s got courage! He’s also got talent, with a style he calls “white boy soul.”

NYC’s Pop-Up Gay Museum The Pop-Up Museum of Queer History, an innovative way to display LGBT history in temporary spaces throughout New York, is gearing up for a new show in Soho that will feature studies on gay musician Billy Strayhorn, the “wimmin’s” separatist movement, the White Night Riots, the Mattachine Society, and Peter Sewally, a 19th-century transgender person. Following Pop-Up Brooklyn in January, Pop-Up Soho runs from August 6 through 25 at the Leslie/Lohman Gay Art Foundation, 26 Wooster St. Besides Leslie/Lohman, the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies at the City University of New York is also sponsoring the exhibit, which includes an opening reception, movie screenings, a music recital, and two new plays. Click here to read more about Pop-Up Soho and the Pop-Up Museum of Queer History.
