Film: QUEENS & COWBOYS: A Straight Year on the Gay Rodeo Has Made It’s Financial Production Goal!

by Accidental Bear

“An honest to God rodeo with just a little more panache.”

“QUEENS & COWBOYS: A Straight Year on the Gay Rodeo” will chronicle the 2011 season of the International Gay Rodeo Association through the lens of a straight, city-raised filmmaker. Roping and riding in 15 rodeos across north America this year alone, the IGRA’s courageous cowboys and cowgirls brave challenges both in and out of the arena on their quest to qualify for the World Finals in October. And along the way, they’ll bust every stereotype in the book.

But it’s more than just cowboys and rodeos. The film will expose the world to the unsung LGBT community of both the old and new west.  Examining where our country currently stands on the issue of gay rights, this uniquely American subject will explore how far we’ve come, and what challenges we still have ahead.

Please remember that Kickstarter is all or nothing – if we don’t reach our goal by August 31st at 9PM/pst, we don’t get any funds! So any help is appreciated – whether that’s $1, sending this Kickstarter link to one person or just pressing “Like” on Facebook. Regardless, thank you for taking the time to support this project!

UPDATE: Goal has been met. Yeee-haaw!

News: Recriminalize Homosexuality, Choi’s Trial, Romney Too Gay Friendly, Bigamist and Pedophiles are ‘Waiting in the Wings’

by Accidental Bear

AFA’S BRYAN FISCHER: RECRIMINALIZE HOMOSEXUALITY

Bryan Fischer, spokesman for the American Family Association (which hosted Rick Perry’s prayer rally), called today for the recriminalization of homosexuality. Though laws against “sodomy” were found unconstitutional in 2003 in Lawrence v. Texas, Fischer said there is “no reason why it cannot be a criminal offense once again.”

NORTH CAROLINIANS RALLY AGAINST MARRIAGE EQUALITY: BIGAMISTS AND PEDOPHILES ARE ‘WAITING IN THE WINGS’

The debate over inserting a constitutional amendment into North Carolina’s constitution to prohibit same-sex marriage isn’t until next month, but proponents of the measure are already organizing in support of the effort. Gregory Phillips of the Fay Observer has this report from yesterday’s small protest: “Ana Maria Blevins, who organized the protest and brought two of her children… said the amendment is necessary because without it, bigamists and pedophiles are ‘waiting in the wings,’ ready to take advantage of any court rulings that challenge the existing law, she said. The demonstrators, several of whom attend church together, objected to same-sex marriage on religious grounds. ‘You do what you want in your own bedroom, but you don’t have a right – a small percentage of the population – to redefine marriage for the rest of us,’ said Heather Harrison. ‘It’s all designed to shove down our throats a lifestyle that is totally against God’s word.’”

Rick Perry Doesn’t Like Romney Because He’s Too Gay Friendly

Perry, who proudly wears an Eagle Scout pin on his lapel, has harshly criticized Romney for a decision made while he ran the Olympics not to allow Boy Scouts to be official volunteers during the games. “Several years have gone by, and neither Mitt Romney nor anyone else who served as an official of the 2002 Winter Olympics has given a clear and logical explanation of why the door to volunteerism was shut on a willing ‘army’ of Boy Scout volunteers,’’ Perry wrote in his 2008 book, “On My Honor: Why the American Values of the Boy Scouts are Worth Fighting For.’’

Choi’s Trial Ends Day One, With More to Come Tuesday

While former Lt. Dan Choi has already spent a day in federal court for the charge of failing to obey a lawful order by a police officer, things are moving at a pace that left Choi’schoi.jpg defense guessing that the bench trial may take three days.  Choi, who has gained a national reputation as a prominent figure in the fight against the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, was arrested with 12 other activists on Nov. 15, 2010, after the group chained themselves to the White House fence to protest the Obama administration’s lack of action on repealing the military policy. Under “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” which was repealed in late December 2010, members of the military could be investigated and discharged on the suspicion that they were homosexuals.

ARMY AND AIR FORCE BASES WILL DISTRIBUTE GAY RIGHTS MAGAZINE

With the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell only three weeks away, OutServe Magazine is expanding its outreach to LGBT servicemembers. In addition to a new interactive website, the magazine now has distribution rights on Air Force and Army bases, which means it will be on the shelves of military exchanges for the first time. The Sept. 20 issue will commemorate the repeal with profiles of nearly 100 gay, lesbian, and bisexual servicemembers.

GLAAD on ‘Dancing with the Stars’ casting Chaz Bono: ‘Tremendous step forward’

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation doesn’t typically weigh in on the latest round of celebrities on Dancing with the Stars, but then it’s not every season that a transgender and an openly gay man decide to tango under the mirror ball. As a result, GLAAD lauded ABC for including Chaz Bono and Carson Kressley in the 13th season“With both gay and transgender contestants represented on this upcoming season, ABC will send viewers a strong message about the diversity within the LGBT community,” said Herndon Graddick, senior of director of programs for GLAAD, in a statement. “At a time when transgender representation in the media is sorely lacking, Chaz Bono joining the cast is a tremendous step forward for the public to recognize that transgender people are another wonderful part of the fabric of American culture. Appearing on such a high-profile show will allow millions of Americans to get to know him in a whole new light.”

An Intimate History of Gay Men in the Military

As “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” comes to an end, we sent Chris Heath to interview dozens of gay servicemen from the past and present to find out what life was really like as America’s military struggled with its last great identity crisis. On a day to come very soon—September 20, 2011—a serviceman’s sexuality will no longer be grounds for dismissal from the U.S. Armed forces. These are the voices explaining what it has been like to be a gay man1 in the American military over the previous seventy or so years, from World War II veterans in their late eighties to young servicemen on active duty.

Marcus Bachman Gets Covered by Gay Glitter & It’s Not the First Time: “glitter baptism”

by Accidental Bear

Eat glitter you dirt bag. Being attacked by what are being called barbarians who cover Marcus Bachman is nothing less than awesome. It is most definitely not the first time he has had gay objects shoved in his mouth (says my gaydar).

flashmob of over 100 “barbarians” approached one of Marcus Bachmann’s religious counseling clinics today in protest of the harmful ex-gay therapy they offer. Staff locked the horde out, so in lieu of confronting the actual Bachmann, the barbarians performed a ritual “glitter baptism” on “Marcus Bachmann,” as they continued to chant, “you can’t pray away the gay, baby I was born this way!” A smaller group similarly protested the cliniclast month. The presidential candidate’s husband has previously compared homosexuals to“barbarians” who “need to be educated” and “disciplined.” (via thinkprogress.org)

Following Obama’s ‘Low Priority’ Immigration Directive, Judge Halts Deportation Hearing For Binational Lesbian Couple

Last week, the Obama administrationannounced that it would review all 300,000 active deportation cases to ensure that they are consistent with the nation’s enforcement priorities. The case-by-case review will allow the government to focus its resources and efforts on high priority targets — individuals who pose a threat to public safety and national security or repeat immigration law violators — while exempting low priority groups, including binational same-sex couples, from deportation, the administration maintained. In a letter sent to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano explained that the new approach would also allow immigration judges “to more swiftly adjudicate high priority cases, such as those involving convicted felons.” “This process will also allow additional federal enforcement resources to be focused on border security and the removal of public safety threats,” she said.

REPORT: UGANDA’S PARLIAMENT MAY ADVANCE ANTI-HOMOSEXUALITY BILL

Jim Burroway is reporting that Uganda’s Parliament may soon take-up the Anti-Homosexuality bill, despite some reports that the cabinet has thrown it out. Previous reports had indicated that the measure — which would impose the death penalty or life imprisonment for some homosexual acts — would be considered in late August.

Top Eight Pro-LGBT Arguments In The Obama Administration’s Anti-DOMA Brief

Joe Sudbay reports that the Justice Department has filed a brief in support of Edie Windsor’s challenge to the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act. Windsor was forced to pay exorbitant federal inheritance taxes after her wife passed away because the government could not legally recognize their 44-year relationship (the couple married in Canada in May of 2007 and their union was recognized in New York). Since President Obama announced that he would no longer be upholding the constitutionality of the Act, House Speaker John Beohner (R-OH) has hired former solicitor general Paul Clement to defend the measure from legal challenges.

World’s 12 worst tourist traps

We’ve all experienced tourst traps. Those heavily advertised attractions that turn out to be bland misrepresentations of the places we’re supposed to be seeing. Expensive timePatpong, Bangkok eaters that leave us with lighter wallets and a taste of burnt coffee in our mouths. So which are the world’s worst tourist traps? For starters, in no particular order, try the devil’s dozen below. Then add your  “favorite” tourist traps in the comments section.

Can the Christian crusade against pornography bear fruit?

Atlanta (CNN) – He is a good Christian, Michael is telling his two therapists. He goes to church most Sundays. He’s a devoted husband and father of two daughters. “But when I would leave on business trips,” he says, “I knew I was going to get to be someone else.” “Prostitutes, porn – I took anything I wanted.” Sitting on a comfortable, worn couch, Michael glances out the window and sees a reflection of himself set against the parking lot of this suburban Atlanta office building. He fidgets, runs his fingers over his closely cropped blond hair and straightens his green tennis polo. He clears his throat. Above his head hangs a poster covered in words describing feelings – angry, anxious, sad. On it is a big yellow cross.

Farm Fresh News: SF Blogger Plans Target Boycott, Two Armed Robberies Near SF Castro, Computer Chips Mimic Human Brain…

by Accidental Bear

SF blogger plans Target boycott

One Target store is already under construction in San Francisco and another is on its way, but gay activists and marriage equality supporters like Roy Steele will not be part of the welcoming committee. Steele, a gay Christian man who lives in the Lower Haight, has initiated a nationwide boycott of Target and a legion of other retailers who subscribe to the Christian Values Network. “When I saw Target on the list of companies on the CVN website I was unhappy. I thought they had learned,” Steele told the Bay Area Reporter.

SF CA: Two armed robberies reported near Castro

San Francisco police have reported two robberies involving a gun near the city’s largely gay Castro neighborhood last weekend. Police suspect the robberies were related. No injuries were reported in either case. According to police, the first incident occurred at about 3:25 a.m., Sunday, August 14. Officer Albie Esparza, a police spokesman, said two men were walking near the 700 block of Castro Street when they heard two people running up behind them.  Esparza said the first victim turned around and saw both suspects, one with a “short, semi-automatic pistol” in his hand. The suspect approached the man and ordered him to hand over all his property.

BREAKING: Obama Administration To Conduct Case-By-Case Review Of Active Deportations

The Obama administration has announced a new process to review all 300,000 active deportation cases to ensure that they are consistent with the nation’s enforcement priorities. The Departments of Homeland Security and Justice will form a working group that will consider deportations on a case-by-case basis and focus its resources and efforts on high priority targets — individuals who pose a threat to public safety and national security or repeat immigration law violators. And while the review won’t explicitly offer categorical relief for any single group — like bi-national same-sex couples, children who were brought to America at a young age, pregnant women, military veterans — the process could provide greater protection for these populations. LGBT families and same-sex couples will be considered as families and could benefit from the discretion of the working group.

T-Shirt Or Sweater? New Google Maps Feature Tells You

Google announced on Thursday that it has added a weather layer to its popular Google Maps tool, allowing users to instantly see current temperatures and weather conditions overlaid on its maps. In a blog post on the official Google blog, the company provides directions on how to use the new feature:

Experimental Computer Chips Mimic Human Brain

Ibm Synapse(SAN FRANCISCO) — Computers, like humans, can learn. But when Google tries to fill in your search box based only on a few keystrokes, or your iPhone predicts words as you type a text message, it’s only a narrow mimicry of what the human brain is capable. The challenge in training a computer to behave like a human brain is technological and physiological, testing the limits of computer and brain science. But researchers from IBM Corp. say they’ve made a key step toward combining the two worlds.

Gun Makers Set Sights On Female Buyers

For years, gun stores were predominantly patronized by men. But these days, shooting ranges and shops selling firearms are seeing more female customers than ever before,Pink and purple handguns are for sale at Hyatt Gun Shop in Charlotte, N.C. Gun store owners reported a 73 percent increase in female customers in 2009 from the year before — a trend reflected by the growing number of guns made just for women. and that has them changing the way they do business. In one brand-new shooting range at Eagle Gun in Concord, N.C., shots from Sharon Skoff’s handgun boom behind glass that separates the range from the rest of the shop. “I just refuse to be a victim if I possibly can in life,” Skoff says. “I actually went and got my concealed permit a couple months ago so I can carry.”
