Ben Cohen’s Retirement May Come Early Due to the Success of His Acceptance Tour

by Accidental Bear

It is bouncing around today that Ben Cohen, our gay-straight alliance hero “Cohen retires to tackle bullying and homophobia.” During my interview with Ben I asked:

AB: Your rugby career has put you in the history books. How much longer do you have in you? Hollywood next?

Ben: I am now approaching retirement. At 32 I am quite old for the position I play on the wing. I will probably make the decision to retire soon as I have a lot of other projects on the go which are demanding more and more of my time.

Ben Cohen Quits Rugby
By Advocate.com Editors

British rugby star Ben Cohen has announced his retirement from the sport in order to devote his time to fighting homophobia and bullying through his foundation.

The Independent reports on the announcement from Cohen, 32, who was player of the year for the Sale Sharks this year.

“Cohen believes he could play for another two years but has turned down offers from clubs in England and France. Instead he will focus on heading up the Ben Cohen Stand Up Foundation, which tackles bullying and homophobia,” reports The Independent.

“I have reached the top in my sport,” said Cohen in a statement on his website. “It has been an incredible journey and has put me in the privileged position I am in today to be able to work on these exciting new projects through the StandUp Brand. As athletes, it is not enough just to have strong bodies. We must have strong characters and use our voices to support those who need and deserve it.”

This week, Cohen will launch his 10-day Ben Cohen Acceptance Tour of U.S. cities to include talks, training sessions, and fund-raising events.

Rugby Star Ben Cohen Opens up to Accidental; Beer with Ben

by Accidental Bear

It has been confirmed, rugby player (Hunk!) Ben Cohen is just as appealing on the inside as he is on the outside. Ben sparks my interest on so many levels (focus, focus) but I am most fascinated with his tender heart and his work with the gay community and his anti-bullying campaing Beer with Ben. “The Ben Cohen Acceptance Tour will be visiting Atlanta, New York, Washington and Seattle in May this year and will be raising awareness and funds, standing up against homophobia and bullying and standing up for equality, tolerance and mutual respect (Ben).” It is clear that Ben’s priorities are with his twin girls and wife. I tip my hat to him for making the world a better place in his spare time and personally flattered that he is taking on the challenge of my gay brothers and sisters with brute force. Talking with Ben you erase the line between gay and straight and think of everyone as the one. If I had an an award to give, I would be proud to pin it on Ben (preferably shirtless). He opened up and gave me straight from the heart answers.

Couldn’t Ask for a Better Cheerleader for Gays than Ben Cohen

by Accidental Bear

Why does Ben Cohen care so much about the gays? Ben gives me hope that people do have hearts of gold and unconditional love. Ben sticks his neck out for the gays (again) and has contributed more to the gay community than most of the gays I know put together. I would like to thank his mom and dad, they obviously did something right.

Ben Cohen is Disappointed in Kobe

By Advocate.com Editors

BEN COHEN X390 (FAIR) | ADVOCATE.COM

Rugby star and gay rights advocate Ben Cohen says he’s disappointed in Kobe Bryant’s use of an antigay slur during Tuesday night’s Lakers game, and he wants a real apology from the basketball star.

“It is disappointing to see this,” Cohen said Wednesday in a statement. “As a professional athlete and rugby World Cup champion, I understand the heat and passion of competition at the highest levels. But we must all remember that strong bodies must be balanced with strong characters, and works toward that end. Our positions as role models demand it.”

Last month, Cohen kicked off a series of events called “Beer With Ben,” a tour of different pubs throughout the states to raise awareness in the fight against homophobia and raise money for the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network.

The Ben Cohen Acceptance Tour will visit Atlanta, New York, Seattle, and Washington, D.C.
