Binational couple: We want equal treatment (CNN Video Interview)

by Accidental Bear

ThinkProgress.org reports “This afternoon, CNN hosted Bradford Wells and Anthony John Makk, a binational couple married in Massachusetts in 2004. Makk — who is an Australian — applied for permanent residency, but his application has been denied since the Defense of Marriage Act prohibits the federal government from recognizing same-sex relationships. Wells had this message for those who support the discriminatory law: “I would like someone to try to uphold the Constitution of the United States. I would like equal treatment. I want my marriage to be recognized just like every other marriage in this country is recognized.” Watch it:

S.F. Gay Married Couple Loses Immigration Battle, Every Gay Loses

by Accidental Bear

As gays we are always in the game of 1 step forward two steps backwards. I think it should be made mandatory to look under the ugly masks of republicans to see if they are hiding any devil horns. We all should be sickened by this story. I feel like a good old fashion Harvey Milk riot should occur. AB

Citing the Defense of Marriage Act, the Obama administration denied immigration benefits to a married gay couple from San Francisco and ordered the expulsion of a man who is the primary caregiver to his AIDS-afflicted spouse.

Bradford Wells, a U.S. citizen, and Anthony John Makk, a citizen of Australia, were married seven years ago in Massachusetts. They have lived together 19 years, mostly in an apartment in the Castro district. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services denied Makk’s application to be considered for permanent residency as a spouse of an American citizen, citing the 1996 law that denies all federal benefits to same-sex couples.

The decision was issued July 26. Immigration Equality, a gay-rights group that is working with the couple, received the notice Friday and made it public Monday. Makk was ordered to depart the United States by Aug. 25. Makk is the sole caregiver for Wells, who has severe health problems.

“I’m married just like any other married person in this country,” Wells said. “At this point, the government can come in and take my husband and deport him. It’s infuriating. It’s upsetting. I have no power, no right to keep my husband in this country. I love this country, I live here, I pay taxes and I have no right to share my home with the person I married.”

Antigay Hatred Losing Steam says My Sweet Heart Rep. Frank

by Accidental Bear

We’re not done people. Hatred is like athletes foot, you have to be diligent to ward it off, or it comes right back with a vengeance. The truth is, is that hate is a battle thats not cured with one dose, it will need a life time of treatment.

I day dream at times that Rep. Frank and Rachel Maddow are my parents and wonder what I might be like today.

Rep. Barney Frank has little faith there will be a federal remedy for gays seeking to marry anytime soon, but he also believes marriage equality is quickly fading as a controversial issue while antigay prejudice becomes less acceptable in society.

In a May interview with Playboy on subjects ranging from health care reform to the legalization of marijuana, the Massachusetts congressman said, “Overall I think antigay prejudice is on its way out.” READ INTERVIEW

See, Gay Couples are just like Straight Ones

by Accidental Bear

So, sad the commonalities we share with straight couples. We are not all fabulous and colorfully happy (gay). Some only  see red and kill our partners too. Now we have 3 fathers cats in the world, so sad.

Massachusetts Man Slays Husband At Home

Michael Losee, a 41-year-old Boston-area man, stands accused of killing his husband Brian Bergeron, 55, in a “tragic incident of domestic violence.” Losee, who had been with Bergeron (a former Barbie clothing designer) for more than 20 years, phoned a friend in Florida and confessed to the crime; the friend then contacted authorities, and Losee turned himself in. It’s unclear who will care for their three Siamese cats, Suki, Soki, and Sushi.

(Reuters) – The highest-profile openly gay lawmaker predicted on Wednesday that the United States could soon see an end to legalized discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender.

“We are on the verge of major breakthroughs,” Representative Barney Frank told the Reuters Future Face of Finance Summit.

He pointed to President Barack Obama’s decision last month to stop defending a law that defines marriage as being between a man and a woman, and a vote by Congress that will lead to an end of the ban on gays serving openly in the military.

“I can foresee now an end to legal inequality based on sexual orientation and gender equality some time in my lifetime,” said Frank, who turned 70 three days ago.
