Accidental Bear Welcomes Mollie Stone’s to Castro

There was buzz around town for the faster than expected opening of Mollie Stone’s in the Castro, SF CA.  I wanted to stop in opening day to see everything fresh and new ( so did everyone else in town). The store was crowded and a bustle in the air. I saw familiar faces from  the neighborhood with excitment in their faces or maybe it as hunger. The staff was busy stocking shelves and answering questions from eager customers. I know the satff had to fight for these jobs because I saw the long lines that snaked from the store the day they had “open call”

San Franciscos Baby-boom of High-End Health Food Stores

Mollie Stones, Whole Foods , Trader Joes , etc are popping up everywhere these days in San Francisco neighborhoods. I am usually 100%  for these yummy specialty grocery stores. I look forward  to my occasional trips to Traders Joe, a treat, a pat on my back and reward myself with a bag of treats( I’m a TOTAL SUCKER for cool or “healthy” packaging). Now that these type grocery stores are becoming COMMON, will they loose their flare?

Whole Foods Haight Almost Ready For Business

Next Wednesday, the former shopping sphincter formerly known as Cala Bell in the Upper Haight will be officially replaced with a brand new Whole Foods. While this may appear non-newsworthy to those of you lucky enough to live near a decent supermarket, those of us who lived year after year after year in the Haight know how special this moment will be, controversies be damned.

Matt Baume attended the preview of the store earlier this week, snapping these delightful shots while touring the joint. At NBC Bay Area, Baume explained how this Whole Foods will differ from the rest. Ahem:

The store will employ about 180 employees, and uses lots of recycled and re-used elements. The checkout area sits atop a former high school gym floor, and some walls are made of reclaimed redwood. That redwood was carbon-dated to about 2,200-years-old.Yes, you read that right. Parts of Whole Foods are older than Jesus.

Also, the place will come equipped with picnic tables just outside the market’s doors, which “might wind up being a good early test of sit/lie.” And how.

Whole Foods Haight opens Wednesday, February 16, at 690 Stanyan (at Haight).
