Amy Winehouse: No Illegal Drugs in System at Death

No illegal drugs were in the system of Amy Winehouse when thetroubled singer died July 23, says her family. Spokesman Chris Goodman said in a statement Tuesday: “Toxicology results returned to the Winehouse family by authorities have confirmed that there were no illegal substances in Amy’s system at the time of her death.” 

“Kill the Gays” Bill Isn’t Dead, No Matter What Uganda’s Cabinet Says

The Ugandan cabinet made its clearest attempt yet to rid the legislative agenda of the “kill the gays” bill. But parliament’s David Bahati isn’t listening, potentially keeping the bill on a fast track toward passage. The Daily Monitor reportstoday that the ruling party’s lawyer, Adolf Mwesige, convinced cabinet ministers during a meeting Wednesday that the bill is unnecessary. Mwesige reportedly advised them to search the archives because other laws already criminalized homosexual acts.

A New Sort of Lesbian Panic Defense  James Kraig Kahler, the Meriden, Kan., man accused of murdering his wife, their two teenage daughters, and her grandmother in 2009, told a Kansas Bureau of Investigation special agent that he was upset because his wife began a lesbian relationship that broke up their marriage, the agent testified in court last week.

Princeton University politics professor Robert George — the founding chairman of the anti-gay National Organization for Marriage (NOM) — has announced that he will co-moderate Sen. Jim DeMint’s (R-SC) The Palmetto Freedom Presidential Forum on September 5. The event is also being co-sponsored by George’s American Principles Project, a conservative group that kicked off this year’s boycott of CPAC to protest the participation of the Republican pro-gay rights group GOProud.

Waterloo is the hometown of Republican presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann, who voted against federal hate crimes protections and has regularly opposed anti-bullying policies.

About 7,500 men and women registered for the 2010 event, raising close to $200,000 for charity. Proceeds were divided among 50 local nonprofit organizations. 

HATE GROUP’S NEW BOOK SMEARS ROMNEY AS PRO-GAY | Hate groupMassResistance is peddling a new book by one of its members called “Mitt Romney’s Deception,” which details how the former Massachusetts governor supposedly promoted gay rights and “sexual-radical programs” in schools. The author, Amy Contrada, regularly attacks LGBT individuals, groups, and allies, through her work with MassResistance, including Kevin Jennings/GLSEN, Elena Kagan, the Southern Poverty Law Center, and more. Contrary to Contrada’s claims that he is pro-gay, Romney, a Republican presidential hopeful, recently signed the National Organization for Marriage’s anti-gay pledge and said Don’t Ask Don’t Tell shouldn’t have been repealed. MassResistance has posted a “trailer” for the book, most of which is just pictures of people at pride parades intended to look radical and offensive. LOOK: Amazing New Pictures From Mars After a nearly three-year journey, the Mars rover Opportunity on Tuesday reached the rim of the Endeavour crater, according to a statement from NASA and the Associated Press. The rover traveled roughly 13 miles to reach Spirit Point, a location on the rim of the crater named after the Opportunity’s sister rover, the Spirit, which NASA lost contact with in March of 2010. According a statement release Wednesday by NASA, the Opportunity will study rocks at the 14-mile diameter crater that until now have have never been seen.

NPR’s Featured ‘Ex-Gay’ Guest Commits Over $200,000 To Dangerous, Unscientific Ex-Gay ‘Coachings National Public Radio has yet to apologize for the platform it provided Rich Wyler on Monday to spout as many lies about sexual orientation as he could fit into the segment. NPR featured Wyler for being ex-gay and allowed him to testify about all the promise he believes reparative therapy offers to people not happy with their same-sex attractions, despite the fact that there is scientific consensus that ex-gay therapy is harmful and ineffective. But NPR made another big journalistic mistake besides its inappropriate framing of ex-gay therapy — the story neglected to mention that Wyler makes his entire living off of providing ex-gay therapy to vulnerable and insecure men he convinces to try to change.

It Gets Better — Even for Adventists While activists within the denomination are trying to change its policies, the official Adventist position is not accepting of LGBT people. That position, as spelled out on the denomination’swebsite, is that sexual activity is reserved for marriage between a man and a woman and that “God’s Word does not countenance a homosexual lifestyle.” The church characterizes homosexuality as “a manifestation of the disorder and brokenness in human inclinations and relations caused by sin coming into the world.”

HIV Rates Up Significantly for Young Black Gay, Bi Men On Monday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released newstatistics on HIV infections from 2006 to 2009, and while the rate remained relatively stable, alarming trends emerged among men who have sex with men, especially African-American MSM.                                                                                                                                        

BRAZIL’S LARGEST CITY MAY HOST ‘STRAIGHT PRIDE’ DAY  Lawmakers in São Paulo, Brazil have “advanced a measure that would establish a “Straight Pride’ Day” in the country’s largest city. The bill, which seeks to address some of the “privileges” afforded to the gay community, is currently “awaiting the approval from Gilberto Kassab, the city’s mayor.” Brazil offers same-sex couples many of the same benefits as opposite-sex couples, but does not recognize marriage equality. Anthony List, along with Reps. Steve King (R-IA) and Louie Gohmert (R-TX), are chartering an anti-gay, anti-choice “Values Voter” bus tour across Iowa next week. GOP presidential candidates Tim Pawlenty and Rick Santorum have already committed to participating in the tour and Michele Bachmann and others are expected to join as well. The hate-driven tour will hit 22 cities over four days, passing through 47 of Iowa’s 99 counties.

NOM Not Invited to NY Weddings, But They’ll Be There Protesting When gay couples in New York start legally getting hitched on July 24, the National Organization for Marriage plans to crash their weddings with a series of protests. The group, which lobbied against passage of the marriage equality bill signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, announced the rallies Friday on its website. Protests are so far being planned in Albany, Rochester, Buffalo and New York City.

Feds Rule Pot Has No Accepted Medical Use The federal government ruled on Friday that marijuana has no accepted medical use and should remain in the same class of drugs as heroin. The decision comes nearly nine years after marijuana supporters asked the government to reclassify the drug to take into account the growing body of research conducted across the globe that proves it’s effective in treating certain diseases,reports The Los Angeles Times.

People who came out in hostile or judgmental environments did not enjoy the same benefits as those in supportive ones.

Man Indicted in Transgender Murder A Newark, N.J., man was indicted Monday on charges of murder and bias intimidation in the September death of a transgender woman. On the night of September 12, 2010, Victoria Carmen White, 28, was out dancing with her cousin when she met Alrashim Chambers, 24, and Marquise Foster, 26. Friends and family of White say the four returned to the cousin’s apartment, where an altercation led to White being shot multiple times.
