Great America Sued Over Gay Slur in Photograph “Were (sic) Fags!

by Accidental Bear

It is about time we bring back public humiliation as a punishment for heinous and hurtful crimes such as bigotry. Bring back that damn scarlet letter, but a new modern version. “California’s Great America has been sued on charges that include sexual harassment by two men who say a photograph of them was doctored in humiliating ways and then put on public display.” It was said that these two gay men’s photos was found scattered around other rides with a thought bubble added that contained the phase “Were (sic) Fags!” So, what I propose for punishment is for those involved, should have to wear large signs for a determined amount of time saying,” Ignorant Dumbass” or perhaps something more judicial.  AB

California’s Great America has been sued on charges that include sexual harassment by two men who say a photograph of them was doctored in humiliating ways and then put on public display.

The lawsuit against the Santa Clara amusement park was filed Monday in Santa Clara County Superior Court by Craig Person and Edmund Yang, both of San Jose. It is the delayed reaction to an incident on August 17, 2008, that began with a ride on the Psycho Mouse roller coaster.

I am drawn in to complexity of simplicity in Becklys photographs.

Waving a White Flag in a World of Colour, 2010

Steven Beckly is a photo-based artist living and working in Toronto, Canada. His artistic practice explores the complexities of identity, relationships, intimacy, and sexuality in contemporary experience. Blending diaristic, documentary, and cinematographic approaches, his work predominantly employs portraiture infused with biographical elements and idealized fiction. Performance plays an important role in his process, and constructed environments provide the context for his images.

He is interested in reconstructing personal and intimate realities and replaying emotional conditions to transform ordinary moments into universal sentiments. Seemingly fictionalized characters are placed in fragmented and open-ended narratives, creating space for imagined structure, context, and meaning. By exploring the connections between the individual, the collective, and their environments, he continually aspires to portray emotional intricacies that comprise and reveal layers of human experience.

His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including exhibitions at Gallery 44 Centre for Contemporary Photography (Toronto, ON), Newspace Center for Photography (Portland, OR), Photo Center NW (Seattle, WA), and the University of the Arts (Philadelphia, PA). His images have been featured in major international publications, including Photo Life (Canada), The Photo Review (USA), and Photo World (China). Recently, he was awarded the Director’s Choice Award at the 2010 CENTER Awards (Santa Fe, NM).
