Death to the Internet Craze?

by Accidental Bear

What constitutes an ‘internet craze’? A certain number of copy cats? Being talked about by Diane Sawyer ? Harmless internet stunts is what comes to my mind that are emulated numerous times over a short period of time. You may now call me Webster. I am easy to please though. It only become annoying when those participating in such memes becomes famous for doing nothing.

via Gawker

Horsemaning, the latest fake internet crazes hows just how meaningless the idea has become. Three days ago Buzzfeed, the tireless meme-aggregator, decided to take a stab at creating a meme of its own. The site posted a vintage picture of two girls posing so it looked like one was the dismembered head of the other. They dubbed this “horsemaning,” after the headless horseman, posted some examples and solicited reader photos. A bunch of readers responded. (You’ll find a few above.)

Today, preternaturally cheery Today show hosts Hoda and Kathy Lee did a bit on horsemaning. They giggled about how silly this “huge internet craze” was, and posed for their own horsemaning picture, after BuzzFeed urged them to over Twitter. Except, as of their segment, the horsemaning “craze” was composed of a handful of Buzz Feed posts, a Facebook page with a few hundred likes, and a few desultory blog posts from other sites. MORE

World Premiere of “Outlaws of Love” – Adam Lambert – HD Live – Sainte Agathe

by Accidental Bear

ADAM LAMBERT OUTLAWS OF LOVE 390x (SCREEN) ADVOCATE.COMI believe most writers learn a lot about themselves through writing about others and thinking about your reading audience. Adam Lambert does not fit into my music box but I am all about applauding for a gay brother. As I race towards 40, I feel as if there isn’t as much room in me for hate and judgment and find more pleasure in giving my gays shout outs and instead of useless bashing of words. Adam, I stand up out of my chair and clapping for your effort put into your new single “Outlaw of Love.”

Adam Lambert performed a song off of his upcoming album at the Sainte Agathe Festival in Canada on July 29, 2011.

Excellent news – Congresswoman Giffords is back and voting tonight!”

by Accidental Bear

This is the most remarkable news I have heard all year. I want to start a petition for Gabrielle Giffords to be able to pound nails into assailants (I don’t like to say his name, because he gets’ off on that) skull for 12 hours a day and the other half of day they keep him alive to feel the pain. Will you sign my petition? Teary eyed reporting brought to you by Accidental Bear.

ABC News’ Jonathan Karl (@JonKarl) and Sunlen Miller (@SunlenMiller) report:   Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., returned to Congress tonight for the first time since being shot in the head in January, casting a vote in support of the compromise debt ceiling bill.

“Gabrielle has returned to Washington to support a bipartisan bill to prevent economic crisis,” read a message posted to Giffords’ Twitter account while members began casting their votes on the House floor.

Minutes later, Giffords slowly entered the chamber to loud, sustained applause and a standing ovation by her colleagues, who huddled around her to give hugs, kisses and handshakes.

Vice President Joe Biden, with a big smile on his face, walked to the House floor and said, “I came to see Gabby, that’s why I’m here.” MORE

ABE SYLVIA X390 (MATT CARR) | ADVOCATE.COMDirty Dancing Abe Sylvia remembers very clearly the first time he saw Dirty Debbie. The handsome 36-year-old Broadway dancer turned screenwriter-director was then a self-described “friendless, fat gay kid” standing by himself in the parking lot of the middle school he attended in Norman, Okla. “Out of nowhere came this girl running across the quad with her top open, and her huge breasts were bouncing up and down,” Sylvia recalls, laughing in between bites of an egg white and asparagus omelet at an al fresco French bistro in West Hollywood. “She looked so free and happy that that image stayed with me for a long time.”

Andrew Cuomo, announced the rallies Friday on its website. Protests are so far being planned in Albany, Rochester, Buffalo and New York City.

Feds Rule Pot Has No Accepted Medical Use The federal government ruled on Friday that marijuana has no accepted medical use and should remain in the same class of drugs as heroin. The decision comes nearly nine years after marijuana supporters asked the government to reclassify the drug to take into account the growing body of research conducted across the globe that proves it’s effective in treating certain diseases, reports The Los Angeles Times.

News Of The World’ Signs Off: THANK YOU & GOODBYE LONDON — Britain’s best-selling Sunday tabloid the News of the World signed

News Of The World off with a simple front page message – “THANK YOU & GOODBYE” – leaving the media establishment here reeling from the expanding phone-hacking scandal that brought down the muckraking newspaper after 168 years. Journalists crafted the newspaper’s own obituary before sending the tabloid’s final edition to the printing presses Saturday night, apologizing for letting its readers down but stopping short of acknowledging recent allegations that staff paid police for information.

Handpicked Headlines: Gay Professors, Rudy Giuliani, Snoopiest Governments

by Accidental Bear

The 11 Snoopiest Governments, According To Google

Google Transparency Report 2011

Texas Coffee Shop Profits After Tweeting Homophobically Just after New York approved same-sex marriage, the Brown Coffee Company of San Antonio, Texas (does Texas allow same-sex marriage?) posted a Twitter that seemed not-so-coincidentally homophobic. People got mad, so Brown’s clowns took that Twitter down and apologized. But they weren’t sorry for long (ka-ching)!

College Kids Think Gay Professors Are All Biased  College students: will they ever be able to judge political bias with any accuracy? No, they haven’t even decided whether Ayn Rand or Chinua Achebe is cooler yet! So it’s no surprise they think every gay teacher is biased. Yeah, with gay bias. A new study found that students at the University of Houston (Clarification: The University of Houston-Downtown, which is a separate school, we’re told)—presented with only a syllabus and a professor’s bio—said that gay professors were politically biased, based only on the fact that they were gay.

Having Reneged on Three Straight Marriages, Rudy Giuliani Ruins His First Gay One  Never believe anything Rudy Giuliani tells you about marriage. “I do”? Bullshit. “To have and to hold”? Lie. “I promise to preside over the wedding of my two good gay friends as soon as marriage is legal in New York”? Take a guess.

Bill Maher and Jane Lynch Give Dramatic Reading of Weiner’s Dirty Facebook Messages

Apology Falls Flat — Like Morgan’s Jokes The Human Rights Campaign issued a statement saying the 30 Rock star “did the right thing by apologizing,” but “that’s just not enough.” On its blog, Truth Wins Out said, “We are glad that he recognizes that he hurt and offended people. However, questions remain.” Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays executive director Jody Huckaby called for “meaningful action to prove the sincerity of that apology” and condemned Morgan for joking about violence “when kids are being assaulted, are dying.”

MTV Pulls Controversial Skins

Only Uncut Dicks For Russell Crowe We know for sure that the sword in Russell Crowe’s hand will never be used to cut the skin hood off of his son’s penis, because he thinks that shit is inhumane and wrong. Foreskin was on Russell’s mind yesterday when he let out a Twitter rant about his true feelings on circumcision. In the back of my mind, I’ve always wished that one day Russell Crowe would flame up over dick skin, but this isn’t what I had in mind at all.

Anthony Weiner Press Conference: Admits Sending Racy Pictures, Refuses To Resign| Video

by Accidental Bear

Weiner I forgive you, so lets all move on now. It is such a minor deal compared to bills on the table in the congress that need our focus. All the hype is a distraction from political boredom. We all secretly, deep down inside want to se Weiner’s wiener. He made a “mistake” and has apologized. Let’s all hold on hands and let go.

NEW YORK — Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) insisted he’s staying in office Monday, even as a string of embarrassing new revelations and photos emerged that apparently reveal a hidden, lascivious online life.

At first, Weiner vehemently denied that a photo of an underwear-clad erection, sent via Twitter to a 21-year-old woman, had come from him, insisting he’d been hacked.

But conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart and his website, BigGovernment.com, rolled out a series of new pictures Monday, including a shirtless shot that appears to depict Weiner flexing and photographing himself. MORE

All Eyes On Wolfram (Scruff Alert)

by Accidental Bear

Out Mag tip off

Wolfram is an adorably scruffy (he’s got a bit of a teen wolf thing going on) Austrian musician and producer (he served as executive producer on the killer Sally Shapiro album Disco Romance) whose self-titled debut album, as collobarator Andy Butler of Hercules and Love Affair fame puts it, “intelligently and lovingly sings the praises of the significant contributions that the euro sound from those early days of electronic music dance has made on pop music.”

Wolfram recently dropped the Out studio to chat about his new album — featuring collaborations with the aforementioned Butler, Shapiro, Paul Parker, and Haddaway of “What is Love” fame — his influences, which definitely include ’90s euro but definitely do not include La Bouche, and working with the infamously shy Shapiro:

Bye-Bye Queerty.com, We Will Miss you

by Accidental Bear

I was just logging on to one of my queer blog staples who had been “off line” for a week fixing emergency repairs, but they have shut their doors, closed up shop and gone. I’m dying to know why. My second favorite queer blog Towleroad, now my number 1, dives in for a closer look. On an up note, on the gay blog food chain, maybe Accidental Bear moves up a notch?

LGBT BLOG QUEERTY CLOSES

Queerty

Following nearly a week in which LGBT blog Queerty was offline, its management has called it quits:

“After more than five years of serving the LGBT community with news and entertainment, Queerty has come to a close. The decision to shutter the site was not an easy one to make, and it is with great pain that we say goodbye to our loyal readership. From all of Queerty’s writers and contributors, from our first unto our last day, thank you for spending some time with us.”

In an email sent out yesterday by its owner David Hauslaib, some explanation was given for the shutdown:

As many of you know, last year Queerty partnered with the folks at 353Media to handle its operations. I transitioned out of my original role to make time to tackle some unrelated projects, and a trusted crew took the reins. Sadly last week, in a scenario that began with some technical headaches, has ended with 353 opting not to continue operating the site. It is a decision I was saddened to hear, and I worked to find an amenable solution that would keep Queerty online. That effort was unsuccessful.

I have watched web properties that I launched come to an close before, but Queerty’s end is certainly one of the hardest to see.

Queerty had cited “technical emergencies” for most of last week while publishing only a Twitter feed.

As someone familiar with both the satisfactions and the challenges that come with keeping up a day-to-day news blog, I can sympathize with the difficulties of letting go. We wish David and his team the best in their new endeavors.
