News: Recriminalize Homosexuality, Choi’s Trial, Romney Too Gay Friendly, Bigamist and Pedophiles are ‘Waiting in the Wings’

by Accidental Bear

AFA’S BRYAN FISCHER: RECRIMINALIZE HOMOSEXUALITY

Bryan Fischer, spokesman for the American Family Association (which hosted Rick Perry’s prayer rally), called today for the recriminalization of homosexuality. Though laws against “sodomy” were found unconstitutional in 2003 in Lawrence v. Texas, Fischer said there is “no reason why it cannot be a criminal offense once again.”

NORTH CAROLINIANS RALLY AGAINST MARRIAGE EQUALITY: BIGAMISTS AND PEDOPHILES ARE ‘WAITING IN THE WINGS’

The debate over inserting a constitutional amendment into North Carolina’s constitution to prohibit same-sex marriage isn’t until next month, but proponents of the measure are already organizing in support of the effort. Gregory Phillips of the Fay Observer has this report from yesterday’s small protest: “Ana Maria Blevins, who organized the protest and brought two of her children… said the amendment is necessary because without it, bigamists and pedophiles are ‘waiting in the wings,’ ready to take advantage of any court rulings that challenge the existing law, she said. The demonstrators, several of whom attend church together, objected to same-sex marriage on religious grounds. ‘You do what you want in your own bedroom, but you don’t have a right – a small percentage of the population – to redefine marriage for the rest of us,’ said Heather Harrison. ‘It’s all designed to shove down our throats a lifestyle that is totally against God’s word.’”

Rick Perry Doesn’t Like Romney Because He’s Too Gay Friendly

Perry, who proudly wears an Eagle Scout pin on his lapel, has harshly criticized Romney for a decision made while he ran the Olympics not to allow Boy Scouts to be official volunteers during the games. “Several years have gone by, and neither Mitt Romney nor anyone else who served as an official of the 2002 Winter Olympics has given a clear and logical explanation of why the door to volunteerism was shut on a willing ‘army’ of Boy Scout volunteers,’’ Perry wrote in his 2008 book, “On My Honor: Why the American Values of the Boy Scouts are Worth Fighting For.’’

Choi’s Trial Ends Day One, With More to Come Tuesday

While former Lt. Dan Choi has already spent a day in federal court for the charge of failing to obey a lawful order by a police officer, things are moving at a pace that left Choi’schoi.jpg defense guessing that the bench trial may take three days.  Choi, who has gained a national reputation as a prominent figure in the fight against the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, was arrested with 12 other activists on Nov. 15, 2010, after the group chained themselves to the White House fence to protest the Obama administration’s lack of action on repealing the military policy. Under “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” which was repealed in late December 2010, members of the military could be investigated and discharged on the suspicion that they were homosexuals.

ARMY AND AIR FORCE BASES WILL DISTRIBUTE GAY RIGHTS MAGAZINE

With the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell only three weeks away, OutServe Magazine is expanding its outreach to LGBT servicemembers. In addition to a new interactive website, the magazine now has distribution rights on Air Force and Army bases, which means it will be on the shelves of military exchanges for the first time. The Sept. 20 issue will commemorate the repeal with profiles of nearly 100 gay, lesbian, and bisexual servicemembers.

GLAAD on ‘Dancing with the Stars’ casting Chaz Bono: ‘Tremendous step forward’

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation doesn’t typically weigh in on the latest round of celebrities on Dancing with the Stars, but then it’s not every season that a transgender and an openly gay man decide to tango under the mirror ball. As a result, GLAAD lauded ABC for including Chaz Bono and Carson Kressley in the 13th season“With both gay and transgender contestants represented on this upcoming season, ABC will send viewers a strong message about the diversity within the LGBT community,” said Herndon Graddick, senior of director of programs for GLAAD, in a statement. “At a time when transgender representation in the media is sorely lacking, Chaz Bono joining the cast is a tremendous step forward for the public to recognize that transgender people are another wonderful part of the fabric of American culture. Appearing on such a high-profile show will allow millions of Americans to get to know him in a whole new light.”

FAMILY ‘VALUES’ GROUPS LINK HOMOSEXUALITY TO PEDOPHILIA

Jeremy Hooper notices that conservative “values” groups like Focus on the Family and the National Organization of Marriage — who publicly argue they respect gay people but oppose their right to redefine the definition of marriage — are going out of their way to connection pedophilia to homosexuality:

Pro-Bullying Campaign: ‘It Gets Better’ Videos ‘Recruit’ Kids Into Homosexual  ‘Lifestyle’

The videos are titled “It Gets Better.” They are aimed at persuading kids that although they’ll face struggles and perhaps bullying for “coming out” as homosexual (or transgendered or some other perversion), life will get better. […] Can you imagine George Washington, Ronald Reagan, or any other president telling school children that it’s okay to be immoral and that they’ll eventually feel better about it? It’s disgusting. And it’s part of a concerted effort to persuade kids that homosexuality is okay and actually to recruit them into that “lifestyle.”

Boomers Will Be Pumping Billions Into Anti-Aging Industry

AntiagingNEW YORK — Baby boomers heading into what used to be called retirement age are providing a 70 million-member strong market for legions of companies, entrepreneurs and cosmetic surgeons eager to capitalize on their “forever young” mindset, whether it’s through wrinkle creams, face-lifts or workout regimens. It adds up to potential bonanza. The market research firm Global Industry Analysts projects that a boomer-fueled consumer base, “seeking to keep the dreaded signs of aging at bay,” will push the U.S. market for anti-aging products from about $80 billion now to more than $114 billion by 2015.

Baby Elephant Shukuru Gets A Raincoat

At the northern end of Kenya’s Nairobi National Park, humans are coming to the rescue for baby elephants. Problem is, humans are also the reason why baby elephants need rescuing. An article in National Geographic‘s September issue profiles a nursery for elephants that have been orphaned mostly by poaching and human-animal conflict.

10 Most Depressing States in the U.S.

job-depressionOn its own, where you live isn’t enough to make you depressed. Personal circumstances and genes also play an important role in mental health, so an area that feels like a downer to one person may be home sweet home to another. That said, mental distress is unusually and persistently common in some states, whether due to economic troubles, lack of access to health care, or other factors.

U.S. hikers in Iran get 8 years in prison, state media reports

Tehran, Iran (CNN) — The two U.S. hikers detained for two grueling years in Iran on spying charges have been sentenced to eight years in prison, state-run TV reported Saturday. Josh Fattal and Shane Bauer each received five years for espionage — specifically “cooperating with the American intelligence service” — and three years for illegal entry, the IRINN reported, quoting an “informed” judiciary source. They have 20 days to appeal their sentence, which was handed down by the Revolutionary Court, IRINN reported.

Anderson Cooper Lose It on Live TV (CNN): Cute!

by Accidental Bear

Our Anderson Cooper loses himself to a number two joke and giggles like a school girl. I claimed him as ours, yes I did.

Before signing off each night, Anderson Cooper concludes AC360 with a segment called the “Ridiculist,” during which he comments on some trivial bit of news or pop culture. It’s a chance for Cooper to show off his less serious side, but he took things to a whole new level tonight when his own joke about French actor/plane urinator Gérard Depardieu caused him to giggle uncontrollably for a minute or so on live TV.

COPENHAGEN FASHION WEEK S/S12: HENRIK VIBSKOV

by Accidental Bear

The untrained eye might not think to look toward Denmark for eye-popping clothes from the future with a feel of times past. Dazed digital magazine caught up with the designer to talk about inspirations ands goals. Dazed said, “Henrik Vibskov always manages to impress his audience by giant installations, graphic prints, imaginative accessories and otherworldly sounds. This time around he was true to his style and presented a collection on a rotating catwalk with models opening and closing doors almost in a working class factory environment which provoked a feeling of paranoia or you might just say Panopticon.” Oh, I drool over the word panopticon. Mad Respect: Open Hand Founder Ruth Brinker Dies at the Young Age of 89

by Accidental Bear

Ruth Brinker was a visionary and fought off ignorance and fear of HIV in the very early years of the disease. Few people get all my respect, but today I put in all with my thoughts of Ruth. RIP you lovely lady. I blow you a big kiss.  A B

(B.A.R.) Ruth Brinker, the retired grandmother who in 1985 started delivering meals to people living with AIDS and went on to found Project Open Hand, died Monday, August 8 at the Eden Villa Assisted Living Facility in San Francisco. She was 89.

She died after a series of strokes and the effects of vascular illness, the agency said in a statement.

Ms. Brinker, who had retired from a career in food services, heard about a neighbor who had died of AIDS. She was shocked to discover that malnutrition was as much a cause of her neighbor’s death as the illness itself, and started preparing meals in her kitchen and delivering them to seven people, according to a statement on Project Open Hand’s website. Soon, of course, that number grew and others came to help her cook and deliver hot, nutritious meals throughout San Francisco.

Butterflysoulfire’s Spring 2012 Collection Works with an ‘Urban Ape’

by Accidental Bear

butterflysoulfire7 Exot der Zeit by Christoph Voy for Butterflysoulfire Spring 2012

Giving up your tickets to the theater might be a smart choice as fashion lookbooks and photo shoots of collections these days have given us front row seats and a mind full of thoughts to play with. Designer Maria Thomas and Thoas Linder hit us with the idea of an “urban ape” for their current collection. If you can take your attention away from the ape masks, you will see garments with a stretchy sports vibe and loose casual draping. These clothes make me think modern dance company. Beats me, it really is all about the masks. (Fashionisto)

Binational couple: We want equal treatment (CNN Video Interview)

by Accidental Bear

ThinkProgress.org reports “This afternoon, CNN hosted Bradford Wells and Anthony John Makk, a binational couple married in Massachusetts in 2004. Makk — who is an Australian — applied for permanent residency, but his application has been denied since the Defense of Marriage Act prohibits the federal government from recognizing same-sex relationships. Wells had this message for those who support the discriminatory law: “I would like someone to try to uphold the Constitution of the United States. I would like equal treatment. I want my marriage to be recognized just like every other marriage in this country is recognized.” Watch it:
