The wild and mangy whiskers of some 60 European hopefuls went on display over the weekend as the 2011 Alpine Beard Festival kicked off in Chur, Switzerland. As the Daily Mail is reporting, the event — now in its 26th year — drew hairy locals as well as some contestants from neighboring Germany and Austria. The event rivals the World Beard and Moustache Championships in Trondheim, Norway. A docu-comedy set in the world of competitive facial hair growing. Following a group of men as they travel the country in search of top honors in a host of competitions, from the National Beard and Mustache Championship in Bend, OR to the World Competition in Norway. With Germany the reigning champion, over 80 local U.S. chapters attempt to come together to form Beard Team USA. Series personalities include Jack Passion (Calif.), a world beard champion and author of “Facial Hair Handbook;” Myk O’Connor (Brooklyn, NY), a member of the Gotham City Beardsmen Alliance; and Bryan Nelson and Allen Demling, of the Austin Facial Hair Club.

Beard News: Fake Bearded Robbery, World’s Best Beard, Stroke that Beard Art, Duke Grizzly Andrew…

Woman dresses as man, draws on beard in robbery COTTONDALE, Ala. (AP) — Authorities say a woman who dressed like a man and drew a beard on her face has robbed an Alabama bank. Police say the suspect robbed the Cottondale branch of the Bank of Tuscaloosa and she may have been involved in another bank heist earlier this month. Witnesses told officers she had a “drawn on” beard when she entered the bank. Police say she told tellers she had a bomb and demanded money after placing a device on a counter. She took an undisclosed amount of money and then fled the scene. The FBI and local police are investigating.

2011 Beard World Champion Crowned: Winner Compares His Beard to Women’s Breast

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) – Burke Kenny said it’s not unusual to notice people staring at his chest.

“I have to say, `I’m up here,'” he said, pointing to his face. “Just like a girl.”

Of course, they’re probably not really staring at his chest so much as they’re looking at what’s covering it: An amazingly full and curly brunet beard with auburn undertones that contrast against the straight black hair on his head.

The 26-year-old Olympia resident recently returned from the World Beard and Mustache Championships in Trondheim, Norway, where he took first place in the full beard with styled mustache category. He won the same title four years ago in England, when he became the youngest international facial hair champion.
