These are the voices explaining what it has been like to be a gay man1 in the American military over the previous seventy or so years, from World War II veterans in their late eighties to young servicemen on active duty.

Nepal’s Version of a Gay Rights Rally

NEPAL GAY PRIDE DANCE X560 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COMGay rights proponents gathered in Nepal this weekend to call for their inclusion in a new constitution being drafted for the country, the Associated Press reports.  The constitution could include equal rights for sexual minorities. And supporters used the occasion of the traditional festival of Gaijatra, which honors the dead, to bring their campaign to Narayanghat. The rally couldn’t be missed in the rural town, with the march reportedly led by two decorated elephants. And bands played music to help draw people into the streets.  The Associated Press reports that LGBT people have felt more comfortable being open about their sexuality in the cities than in rural areas like Narayanghat, so the event marked a milestone in acceptance.

Why Bachmann Won’t Be Able To Reinstate Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell

Turns out that it wouldn’t be hard to do, legal experts say. That’s because the law repealing the ban that President Obama signed last December did not expressly order the Pentagon to allow openly gay or lesbian troops in the armed forces. Congress merely laid out a process under which the ban could be lifted. Under that process, the president, secretary of defense and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff had to certify that repeal would not undermine recruiting, retention, morale and other indicators of what is commonly called military readiness.

Why Cleaned Wastewater Stays Dirty In Our Minds

A boom sweeps around a tank at a sewage treatment plant in Coos Bay, Ore. Even though sewage water can be treated and cleaned, psychologists say getting the "cognitive sewage" out of the water is much more difficult.

Brent Haddad studies water in a place where water is often in short supply: California. Haddad is a professor of environmental studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz. About 14 years ago, he became very interested in the issue of water reuse. At the time, a number of California’s local water agencies were proposing a different approach to the state’s perennial water problems. They wanted to build plants that would clean local wastewater — aka sewage water — and after that cleaning, make it available as drinking water. But, says Haddad, these proposals were consistently shot down by an unwilling public.

Every hour of TV watching shortens life by 22 minutesAnyone who spends six hours a day in front of the box is at risk of dying five years sooner than those who enjoy more active pastimes, it is claimed. Researchers say that watching too much TV is as dangerous as smoking or being overweight, and that the “ubiquitous sedentary behaviour” should be seen as a “public health problem”. Experts from the University of Queensland, Australia, write: “TV viewing time may have adverse health consequences that rival those of lack of physical activity, obesity and smoking; every single hour of TV viewed may shorten life by as much as 22 minutes.”

Lyme Disease Symptoms: Key Facts About This Mysterious Illness Summer is peak season for transmission of Lyme disease. The only known transporter of Lyme bacteria — the deer tick — goes through the most infectious stage of its life cycle in the summer. But you don’t need to be in contact with a deer to get a deer tick bite. Punxsutawney Phil predicts an early spring

by Accidental Bear

Punxsutawney Phil predicts an early spring on Groundhog Day 2011

VIA L.A. Unleashed

Punxsutawney Phil

Punxsutawney Phil, America’s favorite groundhog, predicted an early spring when he failed to see his shadow Wednesday morning at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pa.

Early spring predictions are rare for Phil. But Mike Johnston, vice president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club’s Inner Circle, insisted that the groundhog’s failure to see his shadow was based solely on his accurate foreknowledge of weather trends. Reuters reported Wednesday:

Johnston said the latest prognostication will be entirely accurate, and does not reflect any desire on Phil’s part to cheer up Americans who are suffering through a grueling winter.

“There is no question that Phil is capable of feeling empathy,” Johnston said in an interview. “But he is absolutely incapable of error.”

Others doubt Phil’s infallibility, however. And his record of accuracy isn’t the only controversy that has surrounded the groundhog in recent years: In 2010, PETA protested the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club’s continued reliance on Phil as a weather predictor/tourist attraction and asked the group to move him to a sanctuary and replace him with an animatronic groundhog replica.

Phil is “forced to be on display year round at the local library and is denied the ability to prepare for and enter yearly hibernation,” PETA’s animals in entertainment specialist Gemma Vaughan wrote in a letter to Groundhog Club President William Deeley. Vaughan noted that groundhogs are typically shy creatures and the throng of spectators and bright camera flashes at the annual Gobbler’s Knob festivities are likely to cause little Phil undue stress.

Deeley, however, scoffed at the notion that Phil was unhappy, telling the Associated Press that he is “treated better than the average child in Pennsylvania” and is subject to annual inspections by Pennsylvania’s agriculture department to ensure his well-being. (Plus, according to the Groundhog Club,  the rodent receives a sip of a special “groundhog punch” — an elixir with a secret recipe that extends his life by seven years — every summer.)

But Phil’s actions may have spoken for themselves a few years back, when he made several daring attempts to escape his den at the Punxsutawney Library.

Does Phil look anxious? See for yourself in the video below:

Jack LaLanne Dies

by Accidental Bear

Taped to walls as a queer kid were the typical BOP Magazine pin-ups , Duran Duran, Corey Hart, Cyndi Lauper and so on. I also had a fitness section with photos of body builders (now we know I just had then to stare at their man lumps in their banana hammocks). I distinctly remember  a poster I had of Jack LaLanne. Maybe this was my attempt to display some normalcy amongst my ” sissy room”. I’d lie in bed and stare at Jacks poster for hours admiring the strength. Between me and you I would also pose in the mirror in all sorts of contorted poses I saw in body building magazines. I grew up in a jock house hold, so it was covered in sports magazine. These also came very handy when puberty hit ( wink wink). So, to you Jack LaLanne, your impact on lives spread much deeper than you could ever imagine. Thank you from my queer youth of the 80s.

Fitness Legend Jack LaLanne Dies

Jack Lalanne, Who Helped America Get in Shape for Over 80 Years, Dies at 96

Via ABC NEWS

Fitness legend Jack LaLanne, who spent nearly 80 years helping Americans get in shape, died Sunday at the age of 96. He was a workout pioneer and cultural icon whose brawny physique and enthusiasm set the bar high for so many television diet-gurus who followed his lead.

LaLanne’s agent Rick Hersh told the Associated Press that he died Sunday at his Morro Bay home from respiratory failure caused by pneumonia.

Elaine LaLanne, who often appeared on television with her husband, said in a statement that “I have not only lost my husband and a great American icon, but the best friend and most loving partner anyone could ever hope for.”

He was best known for his fitness show “The Jack LaLanne Show” which started in 1951 as a local program on San Francisco’s ABC Television station and then went nationwide in 1959. He debuted exercises that just required a chair and towel—no special equipment. LaLanne greeted his audiences in their living rooms with his trademark uniform, a shiny jumpsuit, on ABC for over 20 years.

“I tell the truth, I practice what I preach. I’m helping people to a better life,” LaLanne said.

He launched his first fitness club in Oakland, Calif. in 1936. This club included weight training for women and athletes, notions which were revolutionary because of the belief that weight training made an athlete slow and “muscle bound” and made a woman look masculine. LaLanne also invented many of the machines we still use today.

Upon hearing of the legend’s death Sunday, Richard Simmons gave LaLanne full credit for inspiring his work.

“He could get a crowd going and when we traveled together he was just so much fun to be with him and we had a lot of laughter together,” Simmons said.
