The World’s Most Rock ’n’ Roll Hotel Chelsea, Found Dead with a Needle in its Arm

by Accidental Bear

As a punk rock, mohawk wearing adolescent I wondered what it would be like to OD at the famous  Chelsea in New York. No joke! I wanted to be included in the same group as Sid Vicious‘s girlfriend Nancy Spungen. Who would be my Sid? It just came to my attention that I now must kill that dream. Chelsea Hotel is closing its doors.

(via www.telegraph.co.uk)

Once a favourite haunt of artists and musicians, the notorious Chelsea in New York is closing its doors on a colourful and controversial past.  Mark Rothko lived there. Sid Vicious killed his girlfriend Nancy Spungen there, Arthur C Clarke wrote 2001: A Space Odyssey there. Dylan Thomas drank himself to death there, and Leonard Cohen famously pleasured Janis Joplin there, giving rise to one of his most famous songs – and the most famous celebration in song of a hotel ever – “I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel, you were talking so brave and so sweet…”

Hidden Camera Finds Reparative Therapy at Bachmann’s Clinics New evidence has surfaced that Marcus Bachmann’s Christian counseling clinics are actually in the business of reparative therapy for gay people – a claim that he had denied.

ABE SYLVIA X390 (MATT CARR) | ADVOCATE.COMDirty Dancing Abe Sylvia remembers very clearly the first time he saw Dirty Debbie. The handsome 36-year-old Broadway dancer turned screenwriter-director was then a self-described “friendless, fat gay kid” standing by himself in the parking lot of the middle school he attended in Norman, Okla. “Out of nowhere came this girl running across the quad with her top open, and her huge breasts were bouncing up and down,” Sylvia recalls, laughing in between bites of an egg white and asparagus omelet at an al fresco French bistro in West Hollywood. “She looked so free and happy that that image stayed with me for a long time.”

Feds Rule Pot Has No Accepted Medical Use The federal government ruled on Friday that marijuana has no accepted medical use and should remain in the same class of drugs as heroin. The decision comes nearly nine years after marijuana supporters asked the government to reclassify the drug to take into account the growing body of research conducted across the globe that proves it’s effective in treating certain diseases, reports The Los Angeles Times.

News Of The World off with a simple front page message – “THANK YOU & GOODBYE” – leaving the media establishment here reeling from the expanding phone-hacking scandal that brought down the muckraking newspaper after 168 years. Journalists crafted the newspaper’s own obituary before sending the tabloid’s final edition to the printing presses Saturday night, apologizing for letting its readers down but stopping short of acknowledging recent allegations that staff paid police for information.

by Accidental Bear

Santorum, Bachmann, sign Family Leader’s marriage vowFormer U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum and U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann have made commitments to sign pledges in support of traditional marriage sought by the Family Leader, an Iowa group that backs Christian conservative social values.

Man Accused of Killing Boy He Thought Was GayA possible cult leader in North Carolina is accused of shooting to death his 4-year-old stepson because he believed he was gay. Peter Lucas Moses, 27, may face the death penalty if he’s found guilty of the murder of Jadon Higganbothan; Moses is also being charged with the killing of Antoinetta Yvonne McKoy, a 28-year-old woman

Pentagon suspends DADT in wake of court ruling The Pentagon has ordered a halt to all separations of gay troops under “don’t ask, don’t tell” and will begin accepting applications from prospective recruits who identify themselves as homosexuals. The moratorium issued Friday came after a ruling Wednesday by a federal appeals court in California ordering the Defense Department to immediately stop enforcing the law. The court said the law is unconstitutional because it treats gay Americans differently under the law.

BACHMANN: GAY MARRIAGE IS LIKE PEARL HARBOR You are a type of Orville Ethier — a patriot looking to secure American freedoms. The is, will the Senators of Minnesota act like the Honolulu military headquarters and ignore your message? Today we face perhaps the greatest attack on the family in our lifetime.  Now is OUR time to stand up and send a message to avert and equally impending disaster.

Fox News: Gays “Indoctrinating” Your Kids Fox News’ anti-LGBT bias isn’t exactly a well-kept secret. The network has a long history of smearing the LGBT community and providing hate group leaders with national platforms to spew their anti-gay propaganda. Fox television hosts have compared same-sex marriage to incest and polygamy as well as marriage between humans and a number of different animals.

N.Y. Archbishop: Polygamy Next? Now that his state has legalized same-sex marriage, New York Roman Catholic archbishop Timothy Dolan (pictured) is worried that polygamous unions are next and that religious liberty is in danger.

FLYING INTO HISTORY: Final Shuttle Launches The AP reports, “Atlantis and four astronauts rocketed into orbit Friday on NASA’s last space shuttle voyage, dodging bad weather and delighting hundreds of thousands of spectators on hand to witness the end of an era. It will be at least three years — possibly five or more — before astronauts launch again from U.S. soil, and so this final journey of the shuttle era packed in crowds and roused emotions on a scale not seen since the Apollo moon shots.”

Handpicked Headlines: Gay Professors, Rudy Giuliani, Snoopiest Governments

by Accidental Bear

The 11 Snoopiest Governments, According To Google

Google Transparency Report 2011

Texas Coffee Shop Profits After Tweeting Homophobically Just after New York approved same-sex marriage, the Brown Coffee Company of San Antonio, Texas (does Texas allow same-sex marriage?) posted a Twitter that seemed not-so-coincidentally homophobic. People got mad, so Brown’s clowns took that Twitter down and apologized. But they weren’t sorry for long (ka-ching)!

College Kids Think Gay Professors Are All Biased  College students: will they ever be able to judge political bias with any accuracy? No, they haven’t even decided whether Ayn Rand or Chinua Achebe is cooler yet! So it’s no surprise they think every gay teacher is biased. Yeah, with gay bias. A new study found that students at the University of Houston (Clarification: The University of Houston-Downtown, which is a separate school, we’re told)—presented with only a syllabus and a professor’s bio—said that gay professors were politically biased, based only on the fact that they were gay.

Having Reneged on Three Straight Marriages, Rudy Giuliani Ruins His First Gay One  Never believe anything Rudy Giuliani tells you about marriage. “I do”? Bullshit. “To have and to hold”? Lie. “I promise to preside over the wedding of my two good gay friends as soon as marriage is legal in New York”? Take a guess.

LGBT Gathering Marks Anniversary in India Activists held a colorful rally Saturday in New Delhi to celebrate the second anniversary of a court decision striking down a law against gay sex and to push for further progress on LGBT rights.

SF CA|Campaign backers give mayor a leather look He already has the quintessential gay male accessory – his trim mustache. Now Mayor Ed Lee has gone leather. During the Pride festivities the city’s interim leader could be seen sporting a leather biker’s cap. Well, the cartoon version of Lee, that is. The backers behind the “Run, Ed, Run” campaign, aimed at convincing Lee to seek a full four-year team, unveiled a new poster last weekend that showed the leather attired Lee’s cartoon face with a pink background and a rainbow over the left side of his head.                                                                                                                                Lesbian activist Jean Harris dies Longtime lesbian activist Jean Harris died at her home in Palm Springs, California on Saturday, June 25.

A New York state of Pride The 41st annual San Francisco Pride Parade Sunday, June 26 had a joyous atmosphere surrounding it as people celebrated the victory in New York, where late Friday night Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a marriage equality law after it passed the state legislature. Some, like state Senator Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) reminded folks that the California legislature had actually approved a same-sex marriage bill first, back in 2005. But it was vetoed by then-Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

BACHMANN CITES WRONG JOHN WAYNE, PRAISES NOTORIOUS SERIAL KILLER Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) has a thing for John Wayne. In an interview yesterday with Newsmax, she said she wants to live in “John Wayne’s America.” And in the Iowa town of Waterloo today, where she announced her presidential candidacy, Bachmann told Fox News, “John Wayne was from Waterloo, Iowa. That’s the kind of spirit that I have, too.” But unfortunately for historically challenged Bachmann, as the Washington Times points out, the John Wayne born in Waterloo is John Wayne Gacy, the notorious serial killer who murdered 33 teenage boys and young men, not the iconic Western actor. NY Bar Raided During Celebration: Stonewall All Over?

by Accidental Bear

EAGLE BAR NEW YORK CITY X390 | ADVOCATE.COM
In a case of poor timing, New York City’s Eagle Bar underwent a sudden police inspection Friday night just as patrons were celebrating the state’s legalization of marriage equality.

Those present say representatives from the New York Police Department and three other city agencies, including the State Liquor Authority, arrived shortly after the State Senate’s vote and turned off the bar’s lights. They then shined flashlights in patron’s faces and asked some of them to empty their pockets. READ MORE
