Four Day Mega Sale on ‘Bear Hug’ Tee Shirt and Prints

by Accidental Bear
Guess who is a fan.

 About the design:

The design is based on the old notion of a “bear hug,” or a big powerful embrace. Except, you know, from an actual bear. An actual bear who is probably angry because he smells your peanut butter sandwiches but can’t find any.

Who’s behind the design? Pigboy Tees is a t-shirt design collective that combines the talents of Matthew Parsons (Fanboy) and Chris McVeigh (Powerpig). Tees for geeks and geek lovers.

‘Bear Hug’ is now up for sale on Nowherebad until Sept 4th.

Shirts are $12

Prints are $10

Both $20
They also have a Facebook page where they run competitions to win shirts/prints. Check it out – http://www.facebook.com/nowherebad

Film: QUEENS & COWBOYS: A Straight Year on the Gay Rodeo Has Made It’s Financial Production Goal!

by Accidental Bear

“An honest to God rodeo with just a little more panache.”

“QUEENS & COWBOYS: A Straight Year on the Gay Rodeo” will chronicle the 2011 season of the International Gay Rodeo Association through the lens of a straight, city-raised filmmaker. Roping and riding in 15 rodeos across north America this year alone, the IGRA’s courageous cowboys and cowgirls brave challenges both in and out of the arena on their quest to qualify for the World Finals in October. And along the way, they’ll bust every stereotype in the book.

But it’s more than just cowboys and rodeos. The film will expose the world to the unsung LGBT community of both the old and new west.  Examining where our country currently stands on the issue of gay rights, this uniquely American subject will explore how far we’ve come, and what challenges we still have ahead.

Please remember that Kickstarter is all or nothing – if we don’t reach our goal by August 31st at 9PM/pst, we don’t get any funds! So any help is appreciated – whether that’s $1, sending this Kickstarter link to one person or just pressing “Like” on Facebook. Regardless, thank you for taking the time to support this project!

UPDATE: Goal has been met. Yeee-haaw!

News: Recriminalize Homosexuality, Choi’s Trial, Romney Too Gay Friendly, Bigamist and Pedophiles are ‘Waiting in the Wings’

by Accidental Bear

AFA’S BRYAN FISCHER: RECRIMINALIZE HOMOSEXUALITY

Bryan Fischer, spokesman for the American Family Association (which hosted Rick Perry’s prayer rally), called today for the recriminalization of homosexuality. Though laws against “sodomy” were found unconstitutional in 2003 in Lawrence v. Texas, Fischer said there is “no reason why it cannot be a criminal offense once again.”

NORTH CAROLINIANS RALLY AGAINST MARRIAGE EQUALITY: BIGAMISTS AND PEDOPHILES ARE ‘WAITING IN THE WINGS’

The debate over inserting a constitutional amendment into North Carolina’s constitution to prohibit same-sex marriage isn’t until next month, but proponents of the measure are already organizing in support of the effort. Gregory Phillips of the Fay Observer has this report from yesterday’s small protest: “Ana Maria Blevins, who organized the protest and brought two of her children… said the amendment is necessary because without it, bigamists and pedophiles are ‘waiting in the wings,’ ready to take advantage of any court rulings that challenge the existing law, she said. The demonstrators, several of whom attend church together, objected to same-sex marriage on religious grounds. ‘You do what you want in your own bedroom, but you don’t have a right – a small percentage of the population – to redefine marriage for the rest of us,’ said Heather Harrison. ‘It’s all designed to shove down our throats a lifestyle that is totally against God’s word.’”

Rick Perry Doesn’t Like Romney Because He’s Too Gay Friendly

Perry, who proudly wears an Eagle Scout pin on his lapel, has harshly criticized Romney for a decision made while he ran the Olympics not to allow Boy Scouts to be official volunteers during the games. “Several years have gone by, and neither Mitt Romney nor anyone else who served as an official of the 2002 Winter Olympics has given a clear and logical explanation of why the door to volunteerism was shut on a willing ‘army’ of Boy Scout volunteers,’’ Perry wrote in his 2008 book, “On My Honor: Why the American Values of the Boy Scouts are Worth Fighting For.’’

Choi’s Trial Ends Day One, With More to Come Tuesday

While former Lt. Dan Choi has already spent a day in federal court for the charge of failing to obey a lawful order by a police officer, things are moving at a pace that left Choi’schoi.jpg defense guessing that the bench trial may take three days.  Choi, who has gained a national reputation as a prominent figure in the fight against the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, was arrested with 12 other activists on Nov. 15, 2010, after the group chained themselves to the White House fence to protest the Obama administration’s lack of action on repealing the military policy. Under “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” which was repealed in late December 2010, members of the military could be investigated and discharged on the suspicion that they were homosexuals.

ARMY AND AIR FORCE BASES WILL DISTRIBUTE GAY RIGHTS MAGAZINE

With the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell only three weeks away, OutServe Magazine is expanding its outreach to LGBT servicemembers. In addition to a new interactive website, the magazine now has distribution rights on Air Force and Army bases, which means it will be on the shelves of military exchanges for the first time. The Sept. 20 issue will commemorate the repeal with profiles of nearly 100 gay, lesbian, and bisexual servicemembers.

GLAAD on ‘Dancing with the Stars’ casting Chaz Bono: ‘Tremendous step forward’

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation doesn’t typically weigh in on the latest round of celebrities on Dancing with the Stars, but then it’s not every season that a transgender and an openly gay man decide to tango under the mirror ball. As a result, GLAAD lauded ABC for including Chaz Bono and Carson Kressley in the 13th season“With both gay and transgender contestants represented on this upcoming season, ABC will send viewers a strong message about the diversity within the LGBT community,” said Herndon Graddick, senior of director of programs for GLAAD, in a statement. “At a time when transgender representation in the media is sorely lacking, Chaz Bono joining the cast is a tremendous step forward for the public to recognize that transgender people are another wonderful part of the fabric of American culture. Appearing on such a high-profile show will allow millions of Americans to get to know him in a whole new light.”

All Eyes on Artist Jonathan Eric Gann

by Accidental Bear

At first glance of artist Jonathan Eric Gann from  Birmingham, Alabama, you can tell that there is depth behind those eyes, substance. Being the beard freak that I am, for a moment,  I got lost in his delicious beard then brought back to to life by his poignant conversation and the description of his art work. Jonathan’s work has a complexity to it and each piece can be read like story. I respect the fact that the story is not always obvious. It makes me come back for look after look. Mr. Gann’s art work is worth a million double-takes (that’s a lot). Mike Enders

About:

The mind is a tricky landscape. It is pregnant with crags and fissures that make the full understanding and acceptance of one’s personal identity, observed through a social lens, more of a problematic courtship and less a healthy exercise in self discovery. Pouring ideas into a creative format is a way to deal specifically with issues of identity, sexuality, stereotypes, and the darker concerns of a mind constantly in motion. Floating between a two-dimensional and three-dimensional platform, and across a myriad of mediums, themes of communalism and isolation, solipsism and escapism, and the  questioning of religious motivations remain prevalent and repeat through an ever expanding personal lexicon of imagery and ideals

Art is a catharsis, a means to deal with and let go of daily preoccupations of self-doubt and identity.

by Accidental Bear

water tower bucket boys by jeremyokai® on Flickr

Step outside of your musical comfort zone and get down and dirty to some blue grass with the Water Tower Bucket Boys. No, you don’t need to be a folk/ hippy to enjoy these sounds, just a craving for good soul moving music. Readers, meet Water Tower Bucket Boys, Water Tower Bucket Boys, meet our readers (knuckle punch). Mike Enders

After 5 years on the road, 4 albums under their belt and multiple international tours, the Water Tower Bucket Boys have been brewing up a storm in the folk music world.  The boys have collaborated live with members of bands like Frank Turner, Kitty Daisy and Lewis, the Red Stick Ramblers, and the Foghorn Stringband and shared the stage with acts like Old Crow Medicine Show, Mumford and Sons, Wilco, Pokey LaFarge and the South City Three, and Woody Pines.  They have toured extensively in both the USA and abroad, and performed live on the BBC, NPR, and RTE.  Their all original sound is infectious and has spread far and wide to audiences of all ages and walks of life.  Based in Portland, Oregon these young gents got their start busking on street corners playing traditional old time and bluegrass, eventually honing their sound as a solid dance band playing square dances and bluegrass festivals up and down the west coast. www.watertowerbucketboys.com

In Case You Missed it: Cold Star- Acceptance of Your Own and Others Sexual Identity| Video

by Accidental Bear

A boy experiences new desires while watching a man at an indoor swimming pool. Forced up the diving platform by a rowdy gang, he receives unexpected help. Cold Star is a mixture of short and music video. A hybrid, that connects the emotions of a short with beats and lyrics of music. The film is an appeal for acceptance of your own and others sexual identity.

Interview: Walter Van Beirendonck Invites Everyone to Step into his Head at his Retrospect Exhibition 9/13

by Accidental Bear

Photo : Jean-Baptiste Mondino

We got a hold of Walter Van Beirendonck right at a monumental time in his life. Fans and fashionistas have bowed down to Walter’s genius, corky and colorful collections for decades. On September 13, 2011 the Antwerp Fashion Museum will be displaying a large retrospect exhibition of Walter’s work from 1980 – 2012 called DREAM THE WORLD AWAKE. The tickets for the retrospective  better be honored for  a week, because that is how long it will take to honor, respect and swallow the fine details of the clothing and the brilliant visual scrap-book of Walter’s life. Walter confesses that it was emotional while pulling pieces from his archives and seeing his life’s work all in one big space. That must have been massive treasure chest of joy and memories.

Walter, whom I consider friend and ‘bear’ role model played well with all of our questions but stayed a gentlemen when describing what types of kink tickles his fancy. Walter Van Beirendonck is the ultimate Accidental Bear and has a glorious beard and dynamic spirit that deserves its own love song.

by Mike Enders

Q & A with fashion bear Walter Van Beirendonck:

Accidental Bear: How was your summer? With the fashion world aside for a second, where could I find you on a fun day off?

Walter Van Beirendonck? In Antwerp, Belgium. Summer was really busy, working mainly on preparing my retrospective which will open soon, 13th of September,  in the fashion museum, MOMU-DREAM THE WORLD AWAKE.

Fun days are days when I can visit other cities, go to the museum and galleries, browse around in bookshops, eat ice-cream with friends!

A B:  Sherbet or ice cream?

Walter: ICE-CREAM!!! With strawberries

A B: Your clothing stirs up all sorts of reactions from people, usually joy from the amazing playfulness of colors. How would you react to any negative comments to your design? Have you actually received any negative feedback?
