Timber! T-shirts: Only 161 Days until Christmas

by Accidental Bear

the t-shirts…
TIMBER! t-shirts are hand-drawn and hand-screened in a garage in California. All shirts are made in the USA.

www.timberpreservationsociety.com

the beginning…
In early 2006, artist and six year screenprinter, Chad Eaton, drew a lumberjack line drawing and printed it on a few t-shirts for his own amusement. Friends began asking for them. Friends of friends began asking for them, and before he knew it, he was listing them online for sale. This became the perfect outlet for Chad’s drawings, and to Chad’s surprise, has continued to grow year after year.

the story…
All of the TIMBER! designs fit into a story that sets a conflict between lumberjacks and their bosses with forest dwellers, including bigfoot, stuck in the middle. Each design adds more to the story, and as a body of work, have created a complex mythology involving issues with environment and labor among other things.

Hey Couch Potato: 10 extreme Ways to Enjoy the Outdoors

by Accidental Bear

young guy boarding down the side of a volcanoWhen good weather arrives, it’s time to head outside. But what if you’re tired of the same old, tame old wilderness pursuits like hiking, biking and tent camping? Well, hold on to your hats (and boots and backpacks, too). Here are some bold open-air diversions — like sky diving, at left —  that let you enjoy nature to the extreme. Just don’t try them without proper training, robust equipment and plenty of “leave no trace” respect for the places you pass through. (Text: Sidney Stevens)

Burkman Bros. Autumn/Winter 2011 Illustrations

by Accidental Bear

My life is somewhat  illustrated and cartoonish at times. Burkman Bros. illustrations give me comfort to live my world with rounded edges and and sublime compositions of color. Job well done Bros.

Selectism - burkman-bros-autumn-2011-01

The Brothers Burkman have been cutting up a storm recently, gaining plenty of new fans in Europe – including the likes of Dover Street Market, Liberty & L’Eclaireur – and they’ve just released these illustrated images to show off this collection. Illustrated by Michael Sanderson, they’re a great way to add life to a collection. There’s only so many pictures of dead eyed surly models in the woods we can take. (Selectism)

What’s Super Tall, Lanky and Gifted? Thurston Moore In Concert

by Accidental Bear

Thurston Moore performs live at the 11th Annual NON-COMMvention in May.

The iconoclastic Thurston Moore has captivated audiences worldwide for nearly 30 years as a singer and guitarist for the pioneering noise-rock band Sonic Youth — and, more recently, as a solo artist. In this performance, Moore turns down the volume for an acoustic set of songs from his introspective new album, Demolished Thoughts. Moore is joined onstage by violinist Samara Lubelski, harpist Mary Lattimore, drummer John Malone and guitarist Keith Wood of Hush Arbors.

Recorded live at The Queen in Wilmington, Del., Moore performs here as part of the 11th annual NON-COMMvention on May 19.

Handpicked News 7/15: Dalai Lama White House, Apple Follow Microsoft, Janeane Garofalo, ‘Carmageddon’

by Accidental Bear

CarmageddonCarmageddon‘ Could Curb Carbon Dioxide Emissions — Or Cause Them To Climb On an average July weekend, 500,000 cars drive on I-405 in the Sepulveda Pass. But this is no average weekend: Carmageddon has descended on Los Angeles. The big question is just how bad it will get — particularly whether spooked Angelenos will stay off the highways and keep to their own neighborhoods, or perhaps take buses and subways instead. If that happens, maybe this weekend’s repair work could help avert climate catastrophe. HuffPost asked experts at University of California, Berkeley for some back-of-the-envelope calculations on what it could all mean for California’s carbon emissions.

APPLE MONEY CASH FUND RAISING X390 (PHOTOS) | ADVOCATE.COMWill Apple Follow Microsoft in Pulling Out of Christian Values Network? Hours after being named in a petition on Change.org, software giant Microsoft removed their online store from a referral service that funds alleged hate groups. Started by Seattle resident Stuart Wilber, the petitionclaims that dozens of LGBT-friendly companies — including Apple, Dell, and Netflix — are unknowingly supporting alleged hate groups through the Christian Values Network (CVN), a link referral service that donates money to more than 170,000 charities.

Janeane Garofalo Compares Marcus Bachmann to Roy Cohn Garofalo says MarcusJANEANE GAROFALO X390 (CURRENT TV GRAB) | ADVOCATE.COM
Bachmann “seems very gay” to her but hastens to add that’s not a criticism and she’s certain the “gay community would not like to claim him as one of their own.” She goes on to say that he, like many people who are vehemently antigay, seems to be dealing with “personal demons.” She likens Bachmann to Cohn, saying “going after whatever your inner demon is and then the whole culture is dragged down with you.” Olbermann adds Haggard’s name as apt comparison and Garofalo agrees.

Eight Glasses of Water a Day Is ‘Nonsense’Are you one of millions of Americans who looks down with pride at the powerful

stream of colorless, translucent fluid flowing out of your body every time your empty your bladder? Who takes great personal satisfaction in knowing you’ve downed enough bottled water in a single day to satisfy the hydration needs of your average circus elephant? Well, a new study suggests you might be wasting your time. More »

Marcus Bachmann: Conversion Therapy Used ‘At the Client’s Discretion’  Marcus Bachmann defended his Christian counseling group in aninterview published Friday by the Minneapolis-Star Tribune. He denied that the family-run business has an antigay agenda — even if so-called reparative therapy is an option for clients. “Is it a remedy form that I typically would use? … It is at the client’s discretion,” Bachmann said when asked by the newspaper about use of the thoroughly discredited therapy form at his clinics. “We don’t have an agenda or a philosophy of trying to change someone.”
